Guest guest
Dawn... Selenium is a mineral that is used for, among other things, the conversion of T4 to T3. Without enough Selenium in your system you can't covert properly. It doesn't matter all that much how much T4 is in your system. If you don't have enough Free T3 you will be suffering from symptoms of hypo... and not feeling good. So getting adequate amounts of Selenium into your system daily is very important. We can safely take up to 400 mcg daily... getting over 600 mcg daily for any length of time will be toxic. Check the label on your multivitamin/mineral and see how much is in there... then swing by the store and pick up some Selenium and add enough of that to equal a total of about 400 mcg per day. Many of us are finding out that we have weakened adrenals... but most doctors won't test them.... I'm not an expert, on anything, really... but I chose to help out my adrenals by taking an adrenal glandular... process in much the same way as thyroid glandulars (like Armour) are. I allow my body the full range and let it do as it wills.... I've done much better since starting it.... better sleep, my 'adult' hair returning. And finally able to start getting my thyroid doses up.... You do have to be careful with it.... as with anything that has such a profound impact on your body.... I take my thyroid in six doses per day, sublingually.. I take my adrenal glandular with my first morning dose of thyroid as I wake, before I even get out of bed.. I take my selenium in four doses, with meals. I also take my vitamins with meals. I split my caplets into eights to allow me to take a chip with each of my mini meals.... Have I got it right? Now how much do I need and when do I take it? Do I need to include something for the adrenals? Not sure about this. Just reading 's letter, don't have a mercury thermometer mine is digital but thought I would check my temp it is the usual 97.2 even with my meds I don't think it has ever gone over 98, when it does I am deathly ill. Could use your wisdom on this Selenium, adrenal thing. Thanks Dawn
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks. I am not taking a multi-vitamin at the moment but I am taking calcium/magnesium, glucosamin sulfate, E, C, B50 complex and omega plus. So the only trace minerals are in the food that I eat and not sure how much is in there. I have been eating a grapefruit each day and was told that it was not too good for the thyroid meds, this is the website that I was given http://www.foodreference.com/html/artgrapefruit.html and would like your opinion on it. The g/fruit is my way of comming out of the Atkins diet slowly and for the extra C. You were also saying to about his sleep pattern and I can relate to that very much and even with a sleeping pill and an overactive bladder pill, I still wake at least once in the night. It is more often twice and without the sleeping pill I would be up for between 1 and 3 hours. Anything that you say to shed light on this is most welcome as I want to have a good, accurate list when I see the internist in about 6 weeks. Hope I'm not rambling too much just so many things buzzing in my head and trying to sort them out. Thanks Dawn > Dawn... Guest guest
Hi Dawn... sorry for taking so long to get back to you... I think I have things here at the house back in order.... so... on to your comments/questions... As for the grapefruit juice... I've never heard that is was specifically bad for thyroid before... but from reading the site you suggestion the thought that comes to mind was that the tests that they were doing resulted from swallowing the drinks and the meds..... If you take your thyroid sublingually.... that gets the hormone directly into your blood stream.... so it would be far less affected by stomach contents... Other thoughts that come to mind are that when you multi-dose your thyroid you reduce your risk of interference by any thing you are consuming.... I make the effort to eat goitrogenic foods about an hour before a thyroid dose (I multidose my thyroid).. that way if the food is affecting what is in the bloodstream I'm toward the end of a cycle and the next dose will replenish my levels. Doing something like that would still allow you to do your juice without messing up your meds..... As for vitamins... I strongly recommend taking a good multi-vitamin/mineral.... we don't get enough trace elements in our food anymore, especially foods grown on commercial farms using synthetic fertilizers.... I use a store brand version of Centrum Silver.... it's iron free with good levels of everything else.... I then take my iron separately.... to keep it away from my thyroid doses. I've taken my vitamins to a bit of an extreme. Vitamins and minerals do us the most good when they are taken with food. Many components have the best affect when combined with amino acids and proteins and such in the foods that we eat... Vitamins taken on an empty stomach do us very very little good at all. Well... I split my vitamin caplets into 1/8s so that I can take a chip with each mini meal.... getting my body fairly consistent levels of nutrients throughout the day. My body has been responding well to that routine... For your sleep..... How regular a schedule do you keep? Going to bed and getting up at the same times each day.... that kind of thing...
