Hi, Betty, Ellen is right that a pacemaker doesn't cure afib, but I wonder, if you have vagal afib, that is, afib that tends to kick up at slow pulse rates, I would think you'd be right, having the pacemaker drive the heart faster might avoid some afib episodes. Indigestion is a big afib trigger. I've never heard of a beta blocker, such as atenolol, causing it though. If you can get the indigestion under control you might find that the afib markedly decreases. Before I went on the prescription med prevacid, my doc recommended liquid mylanta. Also gas-x if you have burping.

You might ask your doc if you can be on 12.5 mg a day for awhile. Maybe that will be enough. If not, after awhile the docs say you get used to it. Personally I think what they mean by that is not that we go back to functioning normally but rather that we get used to dragging around :-) Do you take the nighttime 12.5 just before bed? Maybe that will help as you'd be sleeping during the highest amount for at least one dose. Also I think food increases its effectiveness, so you might try taking it away from meals. Guest guest
The reason I was asking is that timing of doses versus the time of peak levels in your system might make you feel worse at certain times. Toprol XL is a time release version of metoprolol, which would tend to spread out the absorption over time. Are you under doctor's instruction to take half twice a day? It is intended to be a once a day dose (from the monograph), so your blood levels over the course of the day may be different with two 12.5 mg doses every 12 hours versus one 25 mg dose at a well placed time, such as dinner time or early evening. That way you may be able to place the highest plasma level time at a point when you are least aware of the " zombie effects " . In looking at the Toprol XL literature, they seem to emphasize once a day. Check your prescription, and if it says twice a day, you can check with your doc about trying once a day, maybe in the evening so the plasma levels are higher while you are sleeping and lower during the waking hours. The Toprol XL monograph says that the beneficial effects are good through the 24 hour period. To read about the meds, go to: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/metopxl.htm This appears to be the full monograph, or package insert, with the addition of clickable words that bring up definitions of technical words. It is intended to be a once a day dose (from the > monograph Bobby, my doc okayed my splitting toprol into twice a day doses, actually later into every 6 hour doses. It does have a bigger initial effect vs. constant for 24 hours. If I took the whole 50 mg a day at once, I would be panting like a blowfish. Osteoporosis can be caused by inadequate calcium intake. Since I have stopped dairy products almost two years ago, I have been careful to take 1000 m.g. of calcium citrate supplements along with magnesium daily. I also eat calcium rich foods such as canned salmon and molasses, which is also high in potassium and magnesium, electrolytes important to electrical conduction in the heart. A recent blood test indicated that my calcium level is fine as a result of my precautions. If you have stopped dairy, I would advise you to be careful to check on your calcium level and make sure that you get adequate calcium every day. I want to underscores the danger in acting on information that one finds on the Internet. Because there is so much information here, it is easy to fasten on just one bit of information and miss important complementary information. I have posted frequently about my success in decreasing afib by eliminating dairy products, but I have not spent equal time discussing the necessity for replacing calcium and possibly other nutrients found in milk. Because I would not want to cause problems for anyone who acts on my information about giving up dairy, I strongly urge all to discuss this issue with your doctor before giving up dairy. I did that. My gastroenterologist encouraged me to give up dairy although he said that doing so would have no effect on my afib. He was wrong. This Sunday, May 18, will mark the one year anniversary of my last afib episode of the frequency pattern that I had followed for about the last four years of my twenty year afib career. From May 18 of last year until Dec. 1, 2002, I had no afib. After 15 minutes of afib on Dec. 1, I then had no afib until March 1, when I started a 68 hour episode. Since March 1, I have had no afib. I have had a total of 68 hours and 15 minutes of afib in the past year. Meds alone never helped me achieve that low frequency level before I gave up dairy. I am convinced that eliminating dairy made the difference. I am equally convinced that giving up dairy may not be good for everyone because everyone is different. There is no substitute for a doctor's approval of a strategy that you have read about on the Internet. in sinus in Seattle

Guest guest
Welcome to the group! I lost 9 lbs my first 2 weeks, but there are some people in the group that have lost less than you have. I think it depends on how you were eating before the diet. Continue the good work. Sheri > Just wanted to say " hi. " I'm new to the group. I've been on the SB > diet for 10 days now. Guest guest
Kathy.. It really is individual. It all depends upon your own body, how much water you were retaining, how much weight you need to lose, how you ate before starting South Beach, etc... Some people only lose 3-5 pounds in the first 2 weeks. I lost 15, but I also want to lose around 115 pounds total. I have lost a total of 45 pounds since the beginning of March. 3 pounds is still 3 pounds you will never see again! Congrats on the weight loss.. Hello > Just wanted to say " hi. Guest guest
Kathy, I lost seven pounds during PhaseI. I didn't " do " Phase II well(IMO) so I am on Phase I 1/2.....that's a modified II.....sticking to the safety of Phase I. The three pounds isn't ONLY three pounds. When was the last time you ate real food and lost three pounds? Time of month, age, amount needed to lose will all have an effect on how much is lost.(I have about 100 pounds to lose) Are you exercising? You may have well lost more than three pounds and it was replaced by muscle. Keep going, you are doing well, really. Robyn > Just wanted to say " hi. " I'm new to the group. Guest guest
Gwynne, I also had difficulty with Fosamax and Boniva in pill form...I've been diagnosed with osteoporosis due to the pred. I now get an IV injection of Boniva every three months...it goes to your blood stream and not through the digestive system which had caused me so much heartburn. I still take Evista, calcium and vitamin D to try to keep the osteoporosis at bay. I'm so glad to have you with us, but I understand that you are having to make some huge and complicated decisions. I do hope you get to make that wonderful trip you have planned! I was diagnosed with UIP/IPF after a VATS biopsy in July 2004. Now I also have some Bronchiectasis. I, too, was being treated, unsuccessfully of course, for what was thought to be worsening asthma. By the time I was diagnosed I had to go on full-time 02. Since then, my liter flow at rest has doubled and with exertion, trippled. I have year-round allergies, which doesn't help, nor does Texas' blistering heat, outrageous humidity, and frequent ozone alert days. bah. This week I found out I have osteoporosis at one point on my right hip and osteopenia elsewhere. This makes me sad and worried, because I don't think I'll ever be off the Prednisone - 10mg a day now, but post-transplant patients are on it for life. God willing, I will get a call one of these days for a new lung after being listed this past March. But in spring 2006 I fell and smashed my right hand - had to have 2 surgeries & still have a crooked hand- and now I wonder if my fall was affected by more than klutziness. Mentally, I seem to deal well with the Pred. but I hate the physical effects. Especially the bone thinning and gastric problems. I've had serious reflux (from which I have no symptoms & which is now controlled by medication - fortunately, 'cause if it wasn't I wouldn't have been listed), so I can't take Fosomax or any of the better bone loss preventive drugs. Most of them can't be taken with Nexium, one of the two reflux meds I take, so I use a nasal spray called Miacalcin, which is probably a puny alternative. Anyway, some of us do quite well on the Prednisone, at least in moderate doses. For some reason reason, I usually get posts about 12 hours after they're initially posted, which can be irritating. However, I love this group. Thanks for posting and please keep us updated on you. You're in my prayers. , It's good to see your post. My heart hurts for the pain you and are going through. I'm sorry you feel lousy. , Wish I could wave a magic wand and make some of that mountain of stress disappear. Hang in there. It sounds like you are doing a terrific job in a difficult situation. We're here for you! Ask for help at work if you get the chance.
