Hello and thank you for the welcome. I live in Southern Ohio

in the Portsmouth area. I had my surgery in Huntington, WV at the

Marshall School of Medicine by Dr Denning. I know where

Mansfield is..at least roughly. If your not familar with Portsmouth

its about 2 hours south of Columbus. I'm so glad I found this

group...of course I guess I'm to blame for not looking earlier. I

work for an Internet company so I'm no stranger to the Internet. I

just felt overwhelmed prior to surgery...but now that its over I'm

more comfortable with it. This was my first surgery ever. I still

have my tonsils...so I kind of jumped in feet first as they say.

I'm doing well though...so viva the weight loss.

Take Care,

Hello Ana, welcome to the group. Why don't you tell you a little more

about yourself. How long have you had Afib? What medicines have you

used? How long are your bouts of afib? Nellie Sue

ANA, I hope your Doc. has recommended Coumadin for your Mitral valve

problem?

It is very important to reduce the danger of stroke.

Yes, several of us have pacemakers, and it keeps my heart rate up above 60, and

has no side effects. I have a double, twin lead pacer, that aides in keeping me

in rhythm. Walt

Hi, Milly,

The previous style of ablation used to zap a node in the heart which

then required a pacemaker. I believe this left the person in

permanent afib, that is, the atria were uncontrolled, but the

pacemaker would drive the ventricles at a good rate. I think there

are some people in here who have had that done, or who have a

pacemaker for other reasons.

With " just " afib and no other heart disease, I don't know that any

doc still recommends the pacemaker-requiring ablation. I think they

go for the type of ablation that attempts to cure the afib itself.

Before I tried either type of ablation myself, I would try a better

med than you are on. There's nothing wrong with toprol, I take it

myself, but it is not a " big gun " type of med.

102 (out of 348 entries) in the database are either on flecainide or

have tried it, you can browse the results here...

I also have sleep apnea but i have been on C-pap for 15 years . i have mixed

apnea so the apnea is still a problem . It definately had a role in my going

into my first ( diognoised AF) event 5 years ago.

I then went on Bi-pap and bought an in line humidifier.

any other Apnea folks on this board ? if so maybe we shuld do a data base

and learn some things.

Hi Ana,

I have had AF for about 5 years. I was on Rythmol and it worked for

about 3 years. I went on Amiodarone in December, and it never really

worked. I went to the EP yesterday and he took me off Amiodarone. I

have to wait til my blood level is a .3 and then he is going to put

me on Tikosyn. So effective today I am without AF drugs, except for

the coumindan. Of course I started the day with AF, but it has

finally went away. I have never had a bout to last longer than 14

hours, so I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Nellie Sue

Might be a very good time to remind everyone to cut and paste the appropriate

parts of a message, and not just send the whole message over and over again,

especially the long ones, that have several subjects in them. Walt

Good Morning Dave & Everyone:

I also have been noticing that when some members cut and paste, they

put the wrong message over the wrong signature..........or is it the

right message over the wrong signature? <g>!!!

Anyway, it gets rather confusing........can we all be a wee bit more

careful when responding to have the right message over the right

signature, or something like that <g>!!!

Who's on first <g>!!

Ellen

I think this is a right message over the right signature!!

Good Morning again Dave & Everyone:

Now I see what you are referring to........I thought it might be a

note to me - maybe from a secret admirer ? <g>

Anyway, we do have somewhat of a problem with mixing messages with

signatures.....so my efforts are not in vain.

Sorry if I confused matters even more.............I'm a little slow

this morning.

Hi This is Betty. I wrote to you all a few months ago and was then given a

pacemaker. All was smooth for a while, but I still had occasional AF. Once

I went 27 days with no AF. I think the low pulse that was raised by the

pacemaker was contributing to my nearly continuous AF before the pacemaker.

I am now on Lotensin for High blood pressure (High 170/70 -- now 145/70) and

25 Atenelol. I am beginning to have AF at least once a week now. Better than

before but still there. I also notice a lot of digestive troubles. I'm in

the process of looking up Atenelol for digestive side effects. Has anyone

had this problem? It was nice to have this off of my mind for a few weeks,

but I think I need to refocus again and do more address this AF problem. I

have continued to read your posts and am happy to contact you all again.

Hi, Betty,

It's good to hear from you again, but I'm sorry to hear that afib has

returned. I have a long history of digestive problems associated with afib,

but I don't think that Atenolol has made the problem worse. If anything, my

stomach problems were even worse back in the early days twenty years ago when

my afib was just starting and I wasn't yet taking Atenolol. Since I gave up

dairy products, my stomach problems have improved, but I still have

occasional troubles that don't lead to afib as they previously did, though.

I continue to take Atenolol, which has worked very well for me over the 14

years that I have been taking it. I don't think that I have read of stomach

problems being a side effect of Atenolol, but I suppose it is possible

because we all react differently to meds. Maybe the only way to find out if

Atenolol causes you problems is to try it. The drug has been a great help to

me, although it didn't completely prevent afib until I gave up dairy

products. In the 68 hours and 15 minutes of afib I have had in the past

year, I have not suffered any afib symptoms, thanks probably to the Atenolol

and Verapamil that I also take.

I do hope you find a drug that works for you. You might also try paying

attention to what you are eating so that you might be able to identify

possible triggers.

Good luck,

in sinus in Seattle
