VERY VERY relieved! I'll be able to sleep well...something I haven't been able to do in about 6 weeks! I still will go in for the RAI treatment, but it's more proactive now!! Guest guest
New information comes out all the time... when I was in storm and they were doing my scan.. I found out that at that time thyroid cancer was a death sentence. Even with treatment you wouldn't live another 5 years.... Since then.. they arent' saying anything like that at all anymore... That's why it's important that we all try to stay current... that's what we're here for, right? Look at the lymphedema stuff.. I just found out about all of that... yet anyone that has any type of surgery or radiation is at risk for it... and it's possible that the defects won't appear for another 20 years after the procedure.... I have recently read articles stating that even with papillary cancer, distant metastases as far away as the leg may be found twenty years later, and that those metastases were present from diagnosis. Likewise, there is at least one person on the Thyroid Cancers Forum of About Thyroid who has papillary metastases in the lungs, another who has a recurrence 21 years later. Follicular carcinoma can be even more aggressive, invading blood vessels and going almost anywhere in the body. It is a crime that so many doctors have a cavalier attitude toward well-differentiated thyroid cancer. One dirty little secret that most docs don't know is that a history of papillary or follicular cancer is a risk factor for anaplastic cancer, a disease so hideous that the tumor can be seen to grow before your eyes, and folks rarely survive more than six months after diagnosis. I used to think that anaplastic cancer was very rare. I have since seen figures of between 5% and 18 % of thyroid cancers being anaplastic. We just think it is rare since survivors are so rare. It is a good thing that is getting good follow-up with RAI and scans. Hopefully, she will be allowed to keep her TSH suppressed, too.
