Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 I , Welcome to our family. From the reading that I have done, thyroid cancer seems to be specific to the thyroid. Standard procedure is to remove as much of the gland as possible and then go back in with the RAI and destroy what is left. With no tissue remaining the cancer stops. RAI (ablation) is kinda scary.. but not sooo bad. I went through it 15 years ago to destroy my entire gland, I was in thyroid storm. Severe hyperthyroidism. I was given the capsule and sent home. I had to deal with it all on my own... both of the articles that I found for you this morning suggesting remaining in the hospital... so it must be up to the folks you're working with. There are some things that you need to keep in mind. You shouldn't be around adults for at least 3 days after the procedure, and not around children for at least 5. They really did some poor scheduling for you.... if you are being dosed on Tuesday.. you shouldn't be around anyone yet on Friday. There are precautions that you have to take after the dosing.... including isolation of your self, special decontamination procedures in the bathroom, with your clothing and bedding (you can't share a bed during the isolation period, either). As well as how to handle eating and drinking utensils... Has anyone gone over you about this stuff? Here is one that you might want to read: http://www.indyrad.iupui.edu/public/lectures/HTML/NM/thyroid/THY10.HTM and another: http://www.mythyroid.com/Radioactive%20iodine.htm Feel free to ask questions of us.. there are a few of us that have had RAI, and some have had cancer as well.... Guest guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 I just received a call from the doctor...the body scan came back clear, no traces left of cancer. VERY VERY relieved! I'll be able to sleep well...something I haven't been able to do in about 6 weeks! I still will go in for the RAI treatment, but it's more proactive now!! -------------- Original message -------------- You're welcome..
