I think Synthroid is not very good and people are not healthy in the

long run on it. I felt more hypo on Synthroid than nothing.

Natural thyroid today is mostly made of Pig's thyroids and some are

made from cows (Nutri+Meds bovine). All the animals used for

glandular extracts are specially inspected for safety from mad cow.

If you want to avoid this, the only solution is to use a T4/T3 combo

or Synthroid/Cytomel. This is only two of the 7 thryoid hromones in

the natural. All 7 hromones that the thyroid makes have a function

in the body. Natural thryoid also has calcitonin, which protects

bone. So, the T4/T3 combo is not perfect, but if it is really

important to you to be vegetarian, then maybe it will work fine for

you.

I was also a vegetarian and I think it made my situation much worse.

Thyroidians have trouble taking up sufficitent protein and often

have low protein levels in the blood. Protein is essential for

repair and maintenance and for thryoid function. The quality and

digestibility of vegetarian protein sources is low in general. If

you would like to learn about what are the best diets for health, I

would recommend that you read Weston Prices' book " Nutrition and

Physical Degeneration " Weston price spent many years seeking out

indigenous cultures all over the world and studying their diets and

what happened to them when they became westernized. It has photos

that are so amazing of families in which you can see the

deterioration in younger children as their diets become more

westernized. This book will give you a blueprint of the direction

you need to go with your diet for optimal health. Also, you could

consider juicing as promoted by Dr.Mercola. This is what he

prescribes to his patients to get their vitamins up. Today,

vegetables contain 40% less nutrition than they did in the 1940s.

Chech out ph Mercola's site.

I tend to question anything

that is new and look at it with a very critical eye.

Well then you better totally avoid Synthroid because it is actually

much newer than Armour. Armour and natural thyroid have been used

successfully since the late 1800s with thousands and thousands of

studies done with it since then. It is well known to be safe and

effective. The first natural thryoid patient who started her

treatment in 1890 lived to be 79 and had a long healthy life.

Synthroid did not come into substantial use untill the early 1970s.

You cannot find one study on osteoporosis and Armour. But, you will

find a lot on Synthoroid. Synthroid did not get official FDA

approval untill only about 3 years ago and no studies have been done

on whether it is as effective as Armour over the life of the

patient. No in depth studies have been done to determine how well it

works on a cellular level compared to Armour. It is all just taken

on faith that it is better. The manufacturer of Synthroid has been

written up by the FDA for potency problems and the manufacturer has

had more infractions than Armour ever has over the aproximately 73

years of it's use.

Since you are a scientist you will understand that Synthroid is also

not natural and contains a sodium added to it to make it possible to

get a patent. This reduces its ability to be absorbed unless

conditions of the digestive tract are right. Many hypothryoids lack

sufficient stomach acid to remove the sodium from Synthroid and

therefore do not take it up well. You will have to also consider

that Armour creates a much more normal blood hormone profile with T3

and T4 being very close to that of a healthy human. Synthroid on the

other hand creates a blood profile in which T4 is high and out of

proportion to T3. Studies done in the past have comments from

doctors about the poor blood hormone profile created by Synthroid

and the relatively high amounts needed for the patient to get relief

from symptoms. Other studies have found that the high T4 to T3 ratio

created by synthroid interfere with brain function. I could go on

and on.

So if you want to use the product with the longest use and greatest

guarantee of safety from a scientific point of view, Armour is your

medicine.
