Guest guest
Hi Kimmer, My name is ... and I have been on PTU 3 times ... usually for about a year each time. About 4 years between each time. Every time I had a big emotional upset in my life ... my thyroid would go on a rampage. Usually about 4 months after the upheaval I would start seeing the signs ... rapid heart beat ... low tolerance for heat ... weight and hair loss .... and no menstrual cycle. Along with the PTU they should be giving you a beta blocker (depending on your heart rate) I have Graves disease and I was misdiagnosed for a long time too. My doctor told me I should have RAI (radio active iodine) to kill of my thyroid ... please ... before you do that ... look into different treatments. I am hypo now ... and they have a really hard time getting my medicine levels right. If you have any questions let me know ... I'll try and help you. kimmerleeblue wrote: Hi everyone, I'm very Hyperthyroid, My TSH came back today at less than .01 . The last TSH draw was .04, so eventhough Dr. put me on 50 mg. PTU, it still dropped further. She tripled the dose today. This has been going on for a long time I believe, and I have been misdiagnosed and mistakenly prescribed for who knows how long. Extremely long story. I'm just hopeful that there is an end to this puzzle soon. I see alot of info about hypothyroid, could someone possibly point me to some hyperinfo? I've got to admit that I get frustrated easily, so I can't seem to find sufficient information. Guest guest
Hi, Kimmer! I was hyper for some 20 years and then went into thyroid storm, so I know exactly what you mean about the frustration! Can you show us your labs, with the ranges? I'm curious to see what they've tested. Have they determined a cause for your being hyper? What are your symptoms.. are you losing weight, increased eating... ? Are you still getting your periods? (sorry if you're a guy... Kimmer is not a familiar name to me.... ) Good nutrition when you are hyper is VERY important, your body is all speeded up and in need of extra nutrition to protect itself and be able to keep up with the increase metabolic rate... I learned that the hard way...... There isn't a whole lot of info out there for hyper, you need to determine if you have Grave's or in a hyper swing of Hashi's, or have a defect, like me... then you'll have a better idea of the direction to take to get things stabilized.... IMHO, of course. Topper ()www.thyrophoenix.com On Thu, 30 Sep 2004 02:08:30 -0000 "kimmerleeblue" writes: Hi everyone, I'm very Hyperthyroid, My TSH came back today at less than .01 . Guest guest
Kimmer, I agree with . There are times when there is no choice but RAI (mine for example) but it would be to your advantage to find out what is causing your hyper and treating it correctly BEFORE your metabolic rate reaches the stage where your only alternative is RAI. Not to scare you... but so that you are aware of things, knowledge is power and the more that you understand the easier making choices and decisions will be. If hyper progress to the point of dramatically increasing your metabolic rate and elevating your heart rate, body temp and breathing to a point where surgery is no longer possible and the time involved for medications to slow production, your only alternative then becomes RAI. I was ignored by the doc I saw when my storm started.. he sent me home.... it as another 10 months before I went in to see another doc... I was diagnosed on sight (I was that bad), had blood drawn, was sent to the hospital where I sat with the doc to wait for the results/confirmation, then given a scan to rule out cancer/nodules.. then given the RAI.... no time to consider, or think, or educate myself. I was given a release form that I was required to sign before they would treat me, releasing them of ALL responsibility for what they were about to do to me. Said that I had to have it done NOW or die.... and when it was all over they said that because I had waited so long to take care of this that I may still die..... Don't go into a panic mode..... but learn as much as you can and don't sit around waiting for someone else to figure things out..... Be aware of what is going on, educate yourself on your circumstance and be prepared to ask questions.... Bring notes to your appointments, so that you don't forget questions.... take notes of what the doc is saying, don't worry if you don't understand... dont' worry about spelling.. we'll help you with all of that after... just be thorough and aware and don't make the mistake that soooo many of us did and assume that they will take care of everything..... Oh... get copies of all your labs... we'll help you to understand what they mean as well.....
