Guest guest
Welcome , A few questions first to find out where you're at.... What thyroid hormone are you currently taking (Synthroid, Levoxyl, Armour or?)? What is your current dose? How long have you been on it? What other supplements or meds are you taking? What where the numbers at your last labs, including ranges? A lot of us are taking additional things, from supplemental vitamins and minerals to adrenal support. Personally I'm on Natural thyroid (a generic of Armour), desiccated adrenal glandular, multi-vitamins (that are split to take with each meal), extra vitamin C and E, selenium, iron, calcium, omega 3, CoQ10. I had RAI to kill my thyroid about 15 years ago. I was in thyroid storm and it was the only option to slow my body down before I died... I've had a bumpy road but now that I understand this better, have switched to natural thyroid rather than synthetics (like Synthroid and Levoxyl), added adrenal support and learned which supplements help me and how to eat better (for both food choices, size of meals and timing) I've been doing a LOT better. I'm not back to normal yet, still too much damage to undo from so many years of being underdosed on synthetics, but I am so much better now than I have been for years and years and years. Welcome to our little family, are you ready to learn??? hehehehehehe Topper () On Wed, 18 Aug 2004 01:35:23 -0000 "tracypryor" writes: I was diagnosed with hasimotos in 1999, by a blood test. Guest guest
I think the first question to ask you is what thryoid dose are you on and are you taking Synthroid or some other synthetic? Low thryoid replacement is probably the most common cause of still not feeling well after a long time of treatment. If your doctor is adjusting you by TSH and not symptoms, this is the most common cause of still not feeling well. If your thyroid dose is 2 grains or less of Armour or less than 300mcg of Synthroid, this would easily explain your not feeling good. Synthroid, Lavoxyl and other T4 only meds do not make people feel good who have problems with low conversion of T4 to T3 which is most of us thyroidians in my book. It also takes high doses of Synthroid to feel good. I'm talking 400mcg. But, at this level TSH is totally supressed. Most doctors keep patients undermedicated by their rigid adherence to the normal levels on the TSH test, which is of dubious value in auto- immune disease anyway. The average dose for optimum energy of Armour is 3 to 5 grains a day. The average healthy thyroid maked 4-1/2 to 5 grains a day, so you can't overdose untill you exceed that, except in cases of low adrenal. My first suggestion is that if you are not on Armour, think about switching. My second suggestion is to take a look at your dose. My third suggestion is to do a little research on adrenal fatigue and see if you are suffering from that, which will suck all your energy and resiliance. This is very common in hypothyroidism. If you think your dose is too low and your doctor is an ossified dinosaur, check out the top doc list at http://www.thyroid.about.com. Check out Gail's Thyroid Tips, a most excellent webpage http://personal.bellsouth.net/w/u/wurmstei/ If you want supplement suggestions. Think about Royal Maca which increases thyroid function, balances hormones, and raises energy. Also, natural progesterone which improves thryoid function and thyroid hormone output from the thyroid. Consider Coconut oil if you are on Synthroid or other T4 (do a google search on coconut oil). It increases conversion of relatively inactive T4 to the energy producing thyroid hormone T3. But, don't use it if your thryoid dose is really low as it will cause you to use more thryoid up and deplete you more. You might also consider adrenal support if you are hypoadrenal. These include adrenal glandulars like IsoCort and licorice root and many herbs. You can increse your dose of thyroid with thyroid glandulars such as Nutri+meds, which contain about 1/4 grain per tablet. Stay away from iodine, which can really rob some auto-immune people of energy by stimulating an auto-immune reaction. Some auto-immune thyroid conditons also cause auto-antibodies to attack other tissues and glands. In this case the resulting fatigue can be very hard to address. For this, consider Thymic Protein A or a thymic extract, which helps to balance immune function and turn off attack of your own tissues. They also improve energy and immunity to pathogens.
