Baby Girl, when we talked about this the other day I forgot to ask,

Are you in a clean air office?

That can be very dirty air in that type of plant. ????????

Beth,

That sounds ideal for you. I'm so glad that everything is falling

into place. Just think....no New York winter. I am dreading

winter. I do o.k. until it falls into the 30's....then I can't

Joyce,

It definitely gets cold and there will be days that I just don't go out because of it. The difference will be, I think, is the duration will be less. The winters are shorter and milder. I can remember talking to my sister the first week of March last year and it was 80 and they were eating supper on the porch. They don't get much in the way of snow but do have an occasional ice storm. It generally stays above 35 or so in the daytime but it can get colder at night.

I'm not kidding myself. Durham NC is not St in the Caribbean (don't I wish!!) but it's not nearly as frigid as NY and that's all I'm asking for!!

Having lived in or near all three, conclusion:

Dallas summers are unfit for human beings. Winters are milder but not

all that much more so to justify the summers.

Durham has a few hot and cold spells but on average even during

winter the daytime is decent for getting out.

New York City isn't as bad as some think, but while having hot days

little different from Durham has far more days per year in which

getting outdoors during the daylight hours is not comfortable and the

winter while not extreme is longer.

A total aside but at the age of 19, I spent two day as an outpatient

at the Allergy at their allergy center (separated by six weeks), now

part of their Pulmonology department (1969, ancient days). To this

point that day may have been the most important ever for my physical

well being.

Sinus surgeries were the rage. They said, yes, my opening was small

but that wasn't the problem, it was the congestion and if I had a

larger opening it would be just as full. Unneeded and at that time

rather painful surgery avoided.

I was informed as to the general lack of reliability of allergy tests

(better now) and confirmed the fact that allergy shots were not going

to work for me, as they clearly hadn't to that point.

I was told I could take something nightly that may or may not help,

but probably wouldn't, (long before today's many meds and its now

over the counter and not even used for allergies, but was the rage

right then).

I was told that I knew the main things I was allergic to, to avoid

where possible and, if exposed, do not wait for a prescription, don't

wait for a doctor, don't wait for an ER, immediately if not before

take a double dose of an over the counter antihistamine (strong one)

and follow it up in a few hours with another double dose if necessary.

Prior to that visit I had many times a year I was bedridden for a

week or more with 103-104 degree fevers and sore throats. In the last

39 years I would say I might have averaged one significant allergy

attack every three years. If exposed, I immediately take two

benedryl. I don't hesitate but do it at the least inkling. If needed

I take two more in about six hours. 98% of the time I head the attack

off. Basically I administer what they would if you ran to the ER

except on a timely basis as by the time I hit the ER I would already

be sick. Yes, I also do other things, such as a respiratory therapist

showed here yesterday with my portable oxygen and she had marinated

in perfume. I made her stand outside the door and kept my distance.

But I think of the people I know who have suffered from allergies for

years and I was simply taught how to live with them.

Ah.....now learning how to live with something else, but really the

principle and the idea is the same.

A total aside but at the age of 19, I spent two day as an outpatient

at the Allergy at their allergy center (separated by six weeks), now

part of their Pulmonology department (1969, ancient days). To this

point that day may have been the most important ever for my physical

well being.

Things may be closer in NC than they appear in your mirror. lol.

Except during rush hour traffic, I think you'll find most of Raleigh

even closer than that, more like 30 minutes. Mid city to mid city

Durham to Raleigh is only 22 miles. Chapel Hill is 12 miles and even

Greensboro (quite notable because I was born there..lol) is less than

an hour and don't forget the furniture capital of the world, High

Point, just 15 minutes further.

I think you're going to find yourself very happy with the perfect mix

between a slower more peaceful lifestyle, more moderate weather, and

yet incredible medical care and still every amenity you could ask for

with all that you would expect of a medium sized metropolitan area

and then the extras that three major universities within 20 miles of

each other brings. Just don't get caught in the verbal crossfire

between Duke and Carolina fans with some NC State Fans thrown in when

basketball season hits Tobacco Road (now that nickname is not

something the area should be proud of-my only shame in being from

North Carolina, that as a state we were the leaders in killing people

through the manufacture of cigarettes).

One thing to be prepared for as in most moves is a whole new set of

vegetation, plants, pollen, trees. If you have allergies be prepared

to face new allergens. For me, the proliferation of pine trees is

one. Elsewhere in the country people like pine trees. In NC, where

they abound, they are the trees we always tried to clear so we'd have

just hardwoods left on our land.

,

I lived in Raleigh for 15 years. I have two children still there and many many friends. I love it!!!! I went to Duke Hospital for my VAT...Dr. Marshall was my pulmo. The lung dept there is wonderful and of course, Duke is one of the finest hospitals around. We had a beautiful house in Raleigh, surrounded by trees. The deer would come right up to the front porch. The only down side to Raleigh was the hurricanes. We sure had enough of them and lots of damage. Also, we would have ice storms once a year. Didnt last long, but paralyzed the city for a few days. I had to move from there because the humidity was too high for me and I just could not breathe. Dr. marshall suggested I move to a drier climate..so I did but my heart is still there, along with my kids and friends. The big Outlet mall between Raleigh and Durham is a wonderful place to shop. I would go there before school started and then at holiday times. During the holidays, it is really pretty (Butlington) And then, of course, we would go up toward Ashville to see the leaves changing and Winston-Salme has that neat place with the brick streets and the Amish cookie vendors. Anyway, it is a wonderful place to live. Highway 40 is not fun to drive on but once you get past Greensboro, it gets easier. I love Winston-Salem and if possible, make sure you get to go to eat at Hilly Heaven sometime. So different and alot of fun. Out on a dirt road...no menus, you write on the walls, you eat what they give you..and plenty of it and then..in order to get out to your car, you go through a small theatre where local people are singing, dancing, etc.

Free of charge. Just sit and listen or go up and perform. Not karoke.

Fun... Anyway, I know that area...you will like it..
