Guest guest
Hello , Sunday, August 29, 2004, 10:50:27 PM, you wrote: CC> I haven't seen research that indicates Italy has a CC> lower rate of dyslexia, could you refer me to it CC> please? no because it came up at a conference about bilingual kids - i have also seen it in literature from one of the dyslexia organisations but as to a precise study i couldn't point you there. I know the rate of dyslexia is meant to be lower in France than in the UK from conversations with educational psychologists and teachers here and i suspect that has a lot to do with teaching methods and differently organised brains when learning the french language That doesn't necessarily mean that there is a smaller percentage it probably means that fewer people are picked up as borderline people don't 'fail' in the same way they would in english CC> There is of course a great deal of poor CC> spelling caused by our irregular spelling system but CC> dyslexia is something much more complicated causing CC> problems not just with literacy and numeracy but also CC> with memory, co-ordination, visual and spacial CC> perception and even motor skills. I know it isn't just a spelling problem as i have a lot of personal experience with dyslexia -however the english language probably shows up people who would 'pass' in more regular languages. Plus the way writing is taught in Britain at least with lower case letters with are ambiguous and easily rotated in the head - in the case of b d p and q In France children are taught distinctly different letters for b d p and q which eases confusion for mildly affected kids and that is why IMO that rates are lower CC> There are at the moment large scale CC> trial of Omega 3 in uk schools. yes i know - i have spoken to Dr and Dr Madelaine Portwood and heard them lecture about the preliminary results of the Durham dyspraxia fatty acid trial the results are supposed to be out in september - i'm on the mailing list so i'll let you know if you want -- Best regards, Alison http://www.alisonashwell.com mailto:alison.ashwell@... new work uploaded http://www.artwanted.com/alisonashwell
