Guest guest Posted August 25, 2004 Report Posted August 25, 2004 About a year before I was diagnosed hypothyroid from hypopit my GP gave celexa, then welbutrin, the tried prozac (last one and I quit cold turkey after 3 weeks, could make myself take another). At that point I decided I will never take anti-depressants again. They all wrecked me. The doc swore that one of them had to work and could not understand why these messed me up so bad. I was thinking maybe my serotinin levels were already high enough, but maybe it WAS making my thyroid go lower. Guest guest Posted August 26, 2004 Report Posted August 26, 2004 Exactly exactly right. The worst antidepressants for these causes are the SSRIs. Some other types of antidepressants serve a very very short timed purpose, but I, too, was on another type for 4 yrs, and I have no idea what all it did to me long term. Imipramine is/was a very good TCA for pulling one " out of a black hole " , but 4 yrs????? I took myself off of it very gradually. Antidepressants can cause or make worse hypothyroidism! Quote
Guest guest Posted August 27, 2004 Report Posted August 27, 2004 She won't listen to me. God forbid I know more than she does. I've been telling her to get her money out of our company's stock. That was when it was $40. Now it's under $3. The price on her condo was $30,000. Oh you need to pay that off before you can even consider retiring. Falls on deaf ears. She loves attention. My guess is that's why she had the colonoscopy. And when she has a blood test she has to go the hospital and be lying down. phooey. Guest guest Posted August 28, 2004 Report Posted August 28, 2004 Now ya know I've already shared the experiences with all of my daughters, two of which are hypothyroid already. Both take the synthetic T4, both have moood swings, both have sleep problems ongoing, both have aches and pains they can't explain away, even though they are only 34 and 29, both are losing their hair, the oldest one having lost a ton of scalp hair for the last several yrs has a couple of bald spots even, had accelerated dental decay (even though she has faithfully taken care of her teeth all this time) and now already has dentures, and a whole host of other things going on with both of them. But, ya know what? I don't know what I'm talking about, do I think I'm a doctor, yada, yada, yada. You know the speil. Then there's my sister, who had a hysterectomy just a couple of yrs ago, who is taking the horse pee stuff, who has now, in the last few months, had a "nervous breakdown" of sorts, panic attacks, free floating anxiety, which has affected her job, etc......cries at the drop of a hat. I have apprised her of some of the main symptoms of thyroid problems, given her material to read on it, and told her that it IS a family trait. Advised her to get testing. Do you think that she has? No. I have brought this up to her on numerous occasions, over and over, but to no avail. She is seeing a psychiatrist because she is convinced that they are right, it is literally "all in her head", but I know better from everything she has described to me. Not one suggestion has been made by her psych to run thyroid tests either. Re: Re: Antidepressants can cause or make worse hypothyroidism! I know folks like that..
