Guest guest Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 Hi, I had a mastectomy in 1999...in fact this week is my count down to 5 year survival! I will be 5 years on Saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think your attitude has a lot to do with the way you react to the absence of a breast. If you are positive, then you have a bright outlook and are looking to the future and not to the past. The mastectomy is quite a shock to all of us; we have had breasts (even though some of us have small ones) since we were teens and losing one is not what we want to do. However, I made the decision to go ahead with the mastectomy; my husband was with me on the decision and neither of us have regretted it since. I have a new outlook on life now...I am enjoying it more and seeing through those rose colored glasses. I am also taking time to smell the roses. Having been scared that I was going to die when I first heard the words breast cancer, I have decided that life is worth living but if I mope and worry, then it won't be as much fun. Go out and enjoy your life now that you are a survivor. Look for someone else who is recently diagnosed and give them support. You can now say, " I have been there and understand. " Having support like that is worth millions! Doris Quote
