Guest guest Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 I had my hormone levels drawn in November also ... and I am starting menopause ... is anyone here on hormone replacement therapy? My GP seems to be 100% against it. Re: New Member , Welcome... We don't have many here with Grave's... but we'll help where we can. What were your levels at your last labs? It's been almost a year so I don't have them ... I'm setting up an appt. soon. You haven't mentioned what type of replacement hormone they put you on after the RAI..... I take Armour Thyroid (natural thyroid replacement) So I guess, to start.. What have the results of your labs been since the RAI? Borderline high What med are you on now and at what dose? .165 mcg once per day How long have you been on that dose? The doctor changes my dosage at least once a year ... seems never to get it right. It sounds like your levels might be low (hormone levels) and you're swinging farther hypo... that's the way I feel ... but the test are all "borderline" You've been to the Phoenix site.. did you happen to check out the page on self monitoring? www.thyrophoenix.com/self_monitor.htm How did your numbers come out? My basel rate is always around 96.5 - 97.2 My respiration is low ... I've told my doctor ... and my therapist sometimes I don't have enough energy to breath ... they think it's depression. But I also have panic attacks and hyperventilate ... so I'm weird. And heart rate normal to high ... because of panic attacks ... My husband is hypo ... has been on .200 mcg for about 20 years, temp is also always below normal. Quote
Guest guest Posted August 5, 2004 Report Posted August 5, 2004 Edumom, You probably have a problem with estorgen dominance. If so, you need progesterone cream to balance it out. Go buy "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" by Dr. Lee. Read it while you're traveling. Hope you get this before going no mail. She did lots of research on natural and chemical resources. She hadn't had to use HRT and she said many women don't. But others really need it. The media scare recently contained info the Dr s are concerned about, that using HRT can cause cancer. The nurse had some research to share on studies that had concluded that using HRT for 3 years or less is absolutely no problem. The cancer problems are usually in women who have used HRT for 7 or more years. I had planned on trying soy products, but now I'm learning that soy is really bad for the thyroid...sigh. Quote

Guest guest Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 I'm through meno and did hrt for 15 years cause the docs all thought that was the way to go. Now studies show completely the opposite. Most meno women are not deficient in estrogen but are in progesterone. Read Dr. Lee's book on menopause. I have now set myself up for greater risk of breast cancer and others. Estrogen also doesn't help thyroid function which probably played a role in my becoming hypo. Guest guest Posted August 6, 2004 Report Posted August 6, 2004 My periods were heavy (that's when my Dr ran a blood test and my TSH was 94.) Now they are going back to being heavy so this is what I am thinking about doing (from about.com) One such option is endometrial ablation, a minimally invasive, non- hormonal treatment that requires no incision, takes as little as 30 minutes, is simple and can be performed under local anesthesia. Uterine balloon therapy is one type of endometrial ablation technique where, unlike a hysterectomy, a woman can preserve her uterus. Recovery is fast and easy and most patients can return to work and everyday activities in one day. " Women have long-term solutions available to them, " says Dr. Pruzinsky. " But they need to discuss with their doctors what they want when it comes to treating their condition. " After undergoing uterine balloon therapy, Coburn's heavy periods were resolved. " My period became very incidental. It was not something I had to base my whole existence around. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders. " Uterine balloon therapy is not for those still planning to have children. All surgeries present risks. For more information, visit www.controlheavyperiods.com or talk to your doctor. I'm going to see my gyn next week. I just don't know what that would do to my female hormones. hmmm. Guest guest Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 Something to think about also. I had very similar problems and they found a uterine fibroid tumor which I hear is very common in women with thyroid. They can check for these with ultrasound or MRI. I had mine removed with Myo 2 weeks ago. Don't let the docs fool you...those darn hystos are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Guest guest Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 I had an ultrasound to check for PSOC and nothing out of the ordinary was found. If you have fibroids you can't get the ballon ablation. The thing that has me concernced are my hormones. The hormones will continue on like I'm having periods but I might end up not having any. The reason why I'm thinking about this is one of my neighbours had a hysto done and they had to bring her home on a wheelchair!!! No way jose. I'll let you know what Dr says and what I decide. If I do it I'm going to push for a local instead of a general. Louise - who has never had an operation. The other reason I am thinking about this. It does have some risks but not as much as major surgery. > > I may change my mind too... won't know until I get there and find > out how > > bad it is for me... Guest guest Posted August 7, 2004 Report Posted August 7, 2004 My neighbor just had a hysterectomy and she did great. She was up and walking around just days after the surgery. She even came home the very next night. They have made so many strides in this procedure. My mom just had it done about 6 months ago too. I was told that I had pcos but I am not entirely convinced that my thyroid was causing a lot of the hormonal imbalance that creates the cysts. I also have a small fibroid but it is growing very slowly. The only thing is the painful heavy periods. Hmm wonder if that will get better now. " Dreams are the touchstones of our character. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 I learned how to make home made pads from their website, or a competitors... This was about a year and a half ago. My thought at the time was that I wouldn't be getting periods for much longer and money was too tight to invest in something that I wouldn't need for long.. so I made washable pads according to their instructions.... I like them just fine. And I feel soo much better now. I never really had a whole lot of problems during my period.. the two worst were diarrhea, constipated (from hypo) for years but like clockwork, my period came along - with diarrhea. I won't go into any more detail than that. And I had problems, mild, with cramping of the vaginal barrel when using Tampons. It was just another case of muscle strain causing pain, but it still sucked. I preferred tampons but after the first cycle using the washables and how much better I felt.... I never went back. Guest guest Posted August 8, 2004 Report Posted August 8, 2004 Lack of progesterone is what causes the proliferation of the uterine tissues, when it comes to the heavy periods and fibroid tumors. In other words, the tissues accelerate growth out of the ordinary range, so it starts sloughing off at an alarming rate, plus the growth in the lining of the fibroid tumors. Lack of progesterone has been coined for one of the causes of thyroid problems. I lost mine from somewhere in my late 20s to early 30s.
