Well,

I use PC-Cillin (www.antivirus.com), and I find it works OK. The anti-virus

Marnie told us about (www.antivirus.cai.com) also works superb (and it's

free too). However, with the real-time scan engines that these programs

use,

you need to either make sure they are set up to catch all file types, or

check they include uncommon file types to check, such as *.vbs. scripts.

I actually did end up catching the virus I posted about last week because I

accidentally opened it, and my real-time scan engine was not set-up to scan

*.vbs files. The virus replaced all my picture files (*.jpg) with copies of

itself, it hid all my *.mp3 sound files (and made copies of itself in it's

name). The virus would have also emailed itself to everyone I know, but I

had my email program shut down at the time.

Getting rid of it was pretty simple, but I had to run windows set-up again

because some important *.jpg's were missing. I've since turned off windows

scripting host, which should protect me from all these script based email

type

viruses, and changed the settings in my anti-virus program to scan all

files. It also helps if you set your folder settings to show extensions for

registered file types. This way you know what it is you are opening. As

well, not opening attachments may not be enough, because some email programs

open certain attachments automatically when they display the message. You

can worry about all

that, or use a Mac. Your choice.

My dtr in law keeps trying to talk me in to a MAC; less chance of a virus is

a good point! I did not open the attachment that came with that post, and

Norton quarantined it, so I HOPE I am okay! I would look for files as

suggested, but I have no clue how to find files in Windows!! Marie

I am sorry, but apparently my computer generated an e mail, and then when I

told it to fix the virus, the e mail " disappearred " ; I cannot find it in my

delete messages anywhere; I know it was some letters and numbers, like

wts327 or something like that (that is not what it was); really sorry I

cannot be more help; if it happens again, I will be sure to get the

specifics when I post. marie

For those of you WITHOUT anti-virus protection, I suggest you get

something FAST, use it, and keep it updated! Why? I caught one

myself last month, and two of my friends caught one this month. One

I was able to recover (after 3 or four hours of work), the other did

the " windows format hootchie-koo, " and lost some data.

As Marnie posted many moons ago, you can get FREE, effective anti-

virus protection at www.antivirus.cai.com BUT you MUST update it on a

regular basis for it to be effective! You can set the program to

remind you every so often. It also updates on the click of a button.

This is sort of far out. I haven't sent any messages recently, so it

didn't come from me. As a matter of fact, I keep no one's email (or any

other) address on this computer and I don't even use Microsoft's program (I

forget what it is called) or Netscape to read mail. I run Norton's stuff

constantly and even have *another* anti-virus program running on this very

machine. (There are times when one anti-virus program thinks the other

virus program is a virus, it does get confusing.) There was a time when I

was the systems administrator for three (3) Unix boxes at the University of

Virginia -- talk about hackers -- so I'm probably overly paranoid.

Does anyone remember the " Core Wars " columns in Scientific American and

that they were stopped because of visions of this type of thing?

I just *knew* we were going to need guns and stuff.

Don,

I've also found two with the new version of Norton. I don't know the senders of

the emails either, so don't know where they are coming from.

Hello, everyone.

Be advised that the Klux virus seems to be making the rounds again. I

have loaded the newest version of Norton (2003 Professional Edition)

which has already caught two virus infected emails, though not from

PLS-FRIENDS.

You should all know that I contact my ISP about the obnoxious message that

was copied to me. They said that it should be reported to the FBI, since it

is illegal to make threats. I have already filed a report with my local

police. I wish that others would do the same.

Today I answered the e-mail and it could not be delivered as there was no

they write me again.
