Hey Everyone,

I'm writing to express a " peeve " acquired as a result of being disabled. First,

don't get me wrong here, I am very happy to live in the U.S. and I feel very

blessed that the Americans with Disabilities Act is in place for us. But......

today I went to the investiture of a friend who was sworn in as an appeals court

judge. I was so pleased to go. I used my scooter to travel the 3/4 mile route

from my office (city hall) to the ceremony (state Supreme Court building).

There were curb cuts everywhere, some shade, no obstacles.....all in all, a

pleasant " roll " , as it were. Then I arrived at the building. This building was

designed in 1988 and it is quite " stately and judicial " in appearance. The two

main entrances to the building are reached by climbing a considerable number of

beautiful, granite steps. No chair ramp in sight! I circled the building and

in the rear, along with some parking, trash dumpsters, etc. I found a ramp to

the basement level. I had to press a button, wait for someone at the end of the

speaker to acknowledge me and then wait for a guard to come down from the main

floor to let me in. I felt like a forgotten or 2nd class citizen. I certainly

had expected more from one of our " newer " government buildings.

I appreciate it all the more when I access a building that lets me arrive along

with the rest of the visitors instead of through the back or basement door!
