My first (blighted) pregnancy post WLS happened while I was on Ortho

Tri-Cyclen (pill). Yep, absorption of oral bc is POOR for bypass

patients. When my cardiologist approved (ended up with cardio

myopathy after delivery of the babies), I was able to go back on

Ortho Evra (the patch) which works great as a bc method, but didn't

agree with my heart. If you have no physical reasons to stay off the

patch, weight gain should be minimal to nil.

Pre-WLS I was on the (every three months) shot... can't remember the

name it was so traumatic, lol. I gained 40 lbs on that and suffered

severe depression after being on the shot for a year. My period also

came on after the third shot and never stopped and I became severely

anemic. Most people experience a stop in their flow, but I like to be

different, lol.

Anyway one of the bad things about the shot is that it remained in my

system for around 5 months (no antidote) and I had to live through

the suicidal thoughts and non-stop bleeding. I know my reaction to

the shot was uncommon, but those are some of the possible side

effects and there isn't a whole lot that can be done but to treat the

symptoms until the shot wears off in three-six months.

DEPO-PROVERA!!! That's the name.

Anyway, I'm a patch fan, myself.

I use the patch, I like it. I haven't had any break through

bleeding. I did have a scare a few months ago. I thought I was

pregers. My boobs were killing me and for me that is the 1st sign of

me being pregnant. Well I wasn't (Thank you God!!!!). It was a side

effect of the patch. Other than that I like it. I change it every

Sunday morning.

I would stick with the patch. If you have break through bleeding

then you know it isn't working and you should switch to something

else. In the mean time use the second method of birth control until

you know it is really working.

Hugs!!

Ugh...I have my own scary as* story about Depo. Just 40 lbs? Try

over 100! By the time I had moved to Hawaii, I had gained a lot of

weight on Depo shots and was severely depressed as well. My doc

there immediately took me off it and put me on BCPS. Probably saved

my life! I was on it for 3-5 yrs or so. A very bad time in my life

and anyone who mentions Depo gets a " DON'T DO IT! " talk from me!

No--no other reasons for avoiding the patch. My doctor seemed to

think it was a better alternative than the IUD and the pill for

now. HOPEFULLY my pharmacy program won't mess me over too much as

far as expense!!

Thanks Toi!

Thanks! I think, according to and I BOTH, that the 2nd method

will be in place for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time! LOL

I definitely hope that I don't have any break through bleeding

because this does seem like a simple solution to this issue!

Please be very aware that any form of birthcontrol can cause depression! I was

unaware of this and went through a horrible winter. I got my tubes tied in the

spring and things are so much better now. I am not advocating getting your

tubes tied, but please be aware that depression is a side effect of any hormonal

birth control.

You're very right! One of the things that I'll be watching for

closely are mood changes!

Thanks for the reminder--I hope you're well!
