Indian MPs to attend AIDS conference in Lahore

(AIF) New Delhi, Dec 8 - Ten Indian parliamentarians will attend a

two-day conference on AIDS in Lahore to discuss the role of people's

elected representatives in combating the disease.

The Parliamentarians for Global Action -, a worldwide network of

individual parliamentarians, in collaboration with the provincial

assembly of Punjab -, Pakistan National Assembly and Commonwealth

Parliamentary Association, is organising the conference on HIV/AIDS

and the health policy in South Asia.

The conference begins Saturday evening.

The 10-member Indian delegation led by Congress Rajya Sabha MP

Jesudasu Seelam comprises Milind Deora, Jitin Prasada, Sachin Pilot

(Congress), Kiren Rijiju and Vijayendra Singh (Bharatiya Janata

Party) M. Jagannath and Ravula Chandrasekar Reddy (Telugu Desam

Party), Suresh Kurup (Communist Party of India-Marxist) and Tathagat

Satpathy (Biju Janata Dal).

'The conference, in which lawmakers from all the SAARC countries

would be participating, is to discuss the role of elected

representatives in combating AIDS,' Seelum told IANS.

Jagannath said: 'We will also be discussing why the disease spreads

in our region as well as the prevention and budgetary allocation to

fight it in the south Asian countries.'

At the conclusion of the conference, the parliamentarians would

finalise a 'Lahore Declaration' and send it to the governments of the

member countries.
