ICMR-NIH 5-Days’ Short Term Training on ETHICS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH

RELATEDTOHEALTH. November 27 to December 1, 2006

BACKGROUND

Over the years, social scientists are being increasingly involved in health

research in their own institutions and also as member of multi-disciplinary team

in biomedical research or Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) for review of

ethics in research proposals. Under NIH project for Bioethics Education for

India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been conducting a

series of Symposia and training programs for various levels - medical

undergraduates, medical and non – medical postgraduates, researchers, faculty

and ethics committee - in various parts of the country.

It is now proposed to conduct the above-mentioned training course with a

multi-disciplinary national faculty under this project, with Dr. Amar Jesani,

Coordinator, Centre for Studies in Ethics & Rights, Mumbai as the co-organiser.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course endeavours to promote critical thinking on ethical issues in social

science research related to health for application of ethical principles in

designing research methodology and or review of research proposals.

COURSE FORMAT/METHOD

The course uses the participatory adult learning format comprising

interactive presentations; case study discussion in groups; role-plays and

simulated exercises like reviewing proposals in mock ethics committees; and

viewing of bioethics films etc. Comprehensive and up to date background reading

materials, including ethical guidelines for social science as well as biomedical

research will be provided.

COURSE CONTENT

The course would cover critical areas of research ethics such as:

(a) History and theory of social science research in health;

(B) Understanding concepts such as morality, ethics, human rights and laws in

relation to research;

© Research ethics in relation to culture and community;

(d) Ethical issues in quantitative, qualitative, action and interventionresearch

methods and approaches;

(e) Informed consent,

(f) Privacy and confidentiality;

(g) Research and principles of justice and equity;

(h) Ethical issues in adolescent sexual and reproductive health research;

(i) Evaluating risks and benefits of research;

(j) Ethical issues in data recording, analysis, archiving and sharing;

(k) Integrity, research misconduct and conflict of interests; and

(l) Functioning of ethics committees and responsibilities of ethics reviewers of

research.

(3) Mr. Lester Coutinho: Public Health Institute, New Delhi.

(4) Dr. Sunita Bandewar: Programme Director, Centre for Studies in Ethics and

Rights, Mumbai.

(5) Dr. Suneeta Krishnan: Centre for Public Policy, Indian Institute of

Management, Bangalore; and University of California, san Francisco, USA.

(6) Ms. Neha Madhiwalla: Programme Director, Centre for Studies in Ethics and

Rights, Mumbai.

(7) Dr. Gracy : Sangath Centre, Goa.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION

Mid-level faculty, researchers, Ph.D. and M.Phil students in the social

sciences, biomedical institutions, NGOs, Universities; and members of ethics

committees may apply. Maximum 30 participants will be selected by the ICMR

screening committee on first come first serve basis.

EXPENSES AND LOGISTICS

Selected applicants will be provided economy class shortest route airfare or

second class A/C train-fare, accommodation and food. The venue of the course

will be announced later on.
