Guest guest
My holistic gynecologist who is excellent told me that in addition to taking cortef (replacement cortisol) we need to be doing things to rebuild our adrenals in the process. She recommends a product called ADR by pure encapsulations. Also, even though this is probably hard for an exercise freak to hear, exercising hard when you have adrenal fatigue and hypoT are actually contraindicated because they will hinder the healing process. My adrenal fatigue was so SEVERE that I could never have gotten through it if I tried to exercise during that time. Now that I've been on Cortef for one year, I am slowly building up to more exercise and can tolerate it better. I hope you'll be able to maybe cut the exercise in half while your adrenal glands can rest and rebuild. Frustrated and Depressed Hello. I am new to the group and newly diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and hypothyroid. I have been on Armour (120mg) since 11/3 and Cortef (15mg) since 11/8. I actually feel worse in some aspects than I did before, almost like I traded symptoms. The most frustrating and depressing is my debilitating reaction to exercise. I'm a personal trainer and train hard while I'm at the gym. I've been training seriously for about 9 years and have always been very active. Now I can't lift the amount of weight that I've been used to and my endurance for cardio is way down. I'm so frustrated! I'm trying to " push through it " since that is my personality, but it's getting to the point where I can't. I assume this is my adrenals. Can I take something to help this? I take 25mg of Iodoral a day, along with Selenium, DSF Herbal, Seriphos, DHEA and Vit C. Any help/ encouragement would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Guest guest
Hi, : Just my experience, but if you are hypo you are in the right place here. You are going through what everyone else is here-- hypothyroidism. This is NOT your fault. Let me explain. . . I used to walk 6 miles a day. I bought a NordicTrack ski machine in 1994 and have only been able to use it once in a while for many years. I was doing yoga and Pilates a while back, but had to quit. Earlier this year I changed from an OTC raw glandular to Armour, I had to stop taking everything in order to take a blood test to get the Armour. (I now self-treat.) All my benefit from the glandular went away, I gained 30 pounds in less than 6 weeks, had short cycles again, became extremely tired all the time, and I haven't been able to exercise since because of the fatigue. Just about everyone on this board is having the same frustrations you are. I would never have believed that I would be 65 pounds overweight, but I am. One doc I went to here in Texas insisted that the antidepressant he wanted me to take was a " great weight loss pill. " I've blasted him on a couple of lists and of course, never gone back. I'm waiting for the day that I get optimized and the weight starts to come off. As I was told, the weight won't budge until I'm optimized. VERY irritating, so there isn't much I can do about it yet. I went with Cortef recently, and I'm feeling better but not well enough to exercise yet. OK, now that I've scared this lady off, would one of our gurus kindly respond? ;-} You know the technical stuff better than I do. Guest guest
I feel you need to back off and take it easy for you work outs I know this is hard but your not helping your adrenals doing this. Your dose of coret can go up to 20, 25 or 30 mgs a day. You need to find what dose helps on days your working out hard Take a stress dose so say your doing 5mgs. 4 x's a day and you workout hard 3 days a week on the days you workout take 5 or 10mgs of a stress dose before you workout this is over and above your 5mgs 4 times a day. But to workout everyday like this your adrenals will never get better. Try taking your Temps to help you see what your Adrenals and Thyroid are doing from day to day. If you on the right dose of coret then you can up your Armour but go up slow like 15mgs. every 2 to 4 weeks. I would go to this site and print out the chart and start charting your temps. http://www.drrind.com/tempgraph.asp#directions Also if you take your temp in the morning before getting out of bed under your arm for 10min.'s this will tell you if your on enough armour so if this temp is over 97.8 you thyroid is good but lower and by how you feel your thyroid is still to low. Have you had your Testosterone levels checked this can be very low and the Thyriod and Adrenal Fatigue can cause this have your Total and Free Testosterone checked with your Estradiol. Guest guest
It's the adrenal fatigue that is causing the debilitating symptoms after exercise. Now this is probably something that you don't want to hear but unless you stop or drastically cut down the exercise you simply won't get better in fact you will get a lot worse. Simply, you and your adrenals need rest. The adrenals need rest to heal and every time you stress them with exercise you will need more and more time to catch up. Difficult when it is your livelyhood, I know. Is there a way that you can simply instruct instead of joining in? Lynda Frustrated and Depressed > Hello. It's my life and has been for so long. Isn't there a way to support my adrenals, etc, while continuing to workout? Maybe just not so hard? I just don't know that I can accept it right now.... Guest guest
Linn, I take Cod Liver Oil or Neptune Krill Oil daily along with digestive enzymes and a product that contains Spirulina and Vit C...I can't remember the name of it. I also take a sub-lingual Vit B complex. What else do I need to take? I'm open to anything. I keep reading about glandulars, but have no idea where to start. I also read Dr Rind's website that lists a bunch of supplements/vitamins. Should I start there? Linn wrote: , A good greens formula is a must for adrenal support. Guest guest
You can try upping your cortisol you did say you are doing 15mgs a day this is on the low side. You don't want to do glandulars you on HC most Dr. try to put us on glandulars and they don't work and we have no idea what hormones are it them. Guest guest
Personally I'd back off the sub-lingual B complex and go with a greens formula to get the B's, synthetic B vitamins can be made from yucky sources and actually make you more tired. For some great info regarding vitamins, check out thedoctorwithin.com, read the chapter titled " Ascorbic acid in Not Vitamin C " . What dose of Armour are you on and how are you dosing it? Post your thyroid labs and that'll provide more info. Are you taking any magnesium? What kind of adrenal symptoms have you been having? Guest guest
, I can completely understand how you are feeling. I am in the same boat. My thyroid has been undertreated for a long, long time and I finally got my doctor to believe that my TSH was not a good way to dose my Armour. My TSH was lower on 3 grains than it was on 4 grains this summer. She raised my dose to 3 1/2 and I have gone up to 4 on my own. I was doing Pilates in town 2 times a week, working 3 days a week and doing aerobic workouts and Pilates at home on the other off days. I got to the point where I couldn't do anything without serious effects in 24 to 48 hours. I have severe adrenal fatigue but when I was on 4 grains of Armour this summer I was still able to work out. Then my doctor freaked about my TSH and I stupidy lowered my dose at her request. I have been a mess ever since. The good news? I have been on 4 grains for a couple of days and yesteray I did a simple Pilates ball workout for 20 minutes. My muscles didn't want to work and it was all I could do to muster up the strength to do the most basics. Frustrating...yes, but I did it! I am a little sore today and I rested. Tomorrow I am going to do the same workout and then do it again and again and again (with a day of rest in between) until I can do it easily then work in harder moves. This is my plan and I am sticking to it. I hope you don't feel too bad. I do know how you feel but I can't imagine having exercise as my financial well being and not being able to do it. You will get better and you will be able to do it again. I have to disagree with the folks that say the exercise intolerance is caused by this thing or that thing. I think it is caused by many things and we just have to take the time to heal and be gentle with our bodies. The mind is willing...the hormones are not. Oh...I have now gained 10 pounds in 2 months. Haven't changed a thing but the exercise. That is very sad to me since I lost 65 pounds 3 years ago and have kept every ounce off the entire time. Until my dose was lowered. 10 pounds in 2 months is really depressing but you know what? I know that I am getting better and I can get it back off because my mind is willing. I look at it like I went hypo each day approximately 1%. It took about 90 days for me to be in a big mess and barely able to function. Now I am getting better each day by about 1%. I know it is going to take a while so I am going slow. Take it easy and take one day at a time. Make sure you are on enough thyroid hormone to do some good and if not, these people on this group know how to help if your doctor won't. It does no good to push through the workouts, it only wrecks the next few days totally and completely. Hope that helps a tiny bit. a in North Idaho > > > > It's the adrenal fatigue that is causing the debilitating symptoms > after exercise. > Now this is probably something that you don't want to hear but unless > you stop or drastically cut down the exercise you simply won't get > better in fact you will get a lot worse. > Simply, you and your adrenals need rest. Guest guest
I've had some improvement with energy levels while treating my adrenals with Isocort. When I have days that I feel well and exercise, I will feel a bit tired afterwards, but not affected by it the next day. I am going what you are going through because I have exercised since age 5 on a regular basis and love to sweat, so I've only cut back by one day which is 5 instead of 6. I've had some improvement but maybe I need to stop to totally heal. Harbour wrote: , I can't tell you how depressing it is to hear I might need to back off of my workouts. Guest guest
, The Natural Calm is a great source of magnesium. Post your labs when you get them and I'm sure Val will be able to give you some guidance on taking the Armour and HC. If you feel you can keep up with the workouts, I would suggest trying to keep a regular schedule, maybe just tone it down some until you're feeling better. I was working out 3 times a week with a trainer before I crashed, and then working out every other day on my own. When I stopped it was very difficult to start back. I have not exercised regularly for about a year and half now. I'm feeling pretty good now and can do most anything I want except go back to the regular workout schedule. When I try it I get worn out and can't do much the next day. So I'm working on building back up. It's the cardio that usually does me in, so I try to focus on weights and bands. What I found that does work is to tone the cardio down, I walk slower for a longer period of time. More slow and steady seems to work a lot better. You might give that a try and see how you do.
