- sonohystogram v. HSG

Hey : I've had both a sonohystogram and an HSG. They are very

similar. Both involve fluid in the uterus, one saline and one dye. I

think that generally a sonohystogram is used to confirm the presence

of scar tissue and an HSG is used when you need more definition and

detail (i.e. the exact location of and severity of scarring. HSG's

are also often done to determine the patency of tubes. I do think

that HSG's are most expensive than sonohystograms and for that reason

sonohystograms are often done instead of an HSG to save what may be

an unnecessary expense depending on the circumstances.

So, for initial diagnosis purposes, I don't think it makes a whole

lot of difference which one you have as either one will be able to

tell you whether you have scarring in your uterus.

I guess I would go ahead with the HSG. I have always had my HSG's

done by an RE and never by a radiologist by the way, but that just

may be the way these RE's operate I don't know. My last one was done

by Dr. Valle (who uses HSG's to assess whether a woman's scarring is

such that she is a good candidate for surgery) and he always does his

own HSG's.
