INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE for HIV/AIDS stigma and gender campaign

Breakthrough is seeking an intern to provide research and writing on HIV/AIDS,

stigma and discrimination, and gender. Breakthrough is a human rights

organization that uses education and popular culture to promote values of

dignity, equality and justice (www.breakthrough.tv). Breakthrough is currently

developing a multi-media and education campaign to reduce stigma and

discrimination against HIV-positive women. The campaign will include mass media

(TV, radio, print, outdoor) and a youth peer education intervention.

Breakthrough is seeking an intern who can work with Breakthrough for 4-6 weeks

to conduct research and draft fact sheets and one-pagers on legal and social

advocacy issues related to HIV/AIDS with a gender perspective (for a list of

some of the issues to be researched see below).

The intern will be expected to:

a. Conduct internet and literature based research on assigned issues and draft

fact sheets on the issues

b. Work to understand the organization's mission and identify additional issues

of importance as per the organizations mission and conduct research on them.

c. Meet with other NGO's or lawyers as needed to develop research and understand

multiple perspectives on the issues

d. Write one-pagers on the given issues for press kits, website and other

outreach material.

The ideal candidate will have strong research and English writing skills and

experience working/studying law, women's rights, gender, health or HIV/AIDS.

The candidate must be familiar with a rights-based approach or willing to learn

about the organizations human rights approach.

Issues may include, but are not limited to:

a. Women's access to treatment and care

b. Access to ARV treatment

c. Drug patent laws

d. Anti-discrimination legislation and case law applicable to HIV/AIDS-based

discrimination

e. The Domestic Violence Bill

f. Section 377 and its affects on vulnerability to HIV/AIDS

g. US foreign policies (i.e. PEPFAR) and affects on HIV/AIDS in India,

especially WLHA.

h. Legal and social concerns surrounding pre-marital testing and mandatory

testing

i. National HIV/AIDS policies and their effects on WLHA

j. Registration of marriages

k. Rights of patients and remedies for maltreatment

l. Availability of male/female condoms

m. Policies towards sexual education

n. Effective anti-stigma laws (from India and abroad)
