Guest guest
Anyone else from the Washington DC area? There was an article in today's Washington Post that talked about testing for pre-diabetes conditions, especially in overweight people. The only issue I have with the article is that I think it puts the cart before the horse. From everything I have read and learned about diabetes, and from looking at case studies in my own family, I am convinced that my diabetes, in its early stages, preceded and precipitated my weight gain and not the other way around. If weight gain caused diabetes, there would be others in my own family who would have it. For example, my mother is from a family of 9 siblings. Two of them contracted type 2 diabetes. The first was her brother, who has always been skinny as a rail. He was the athlete of the family. The other is one of her sisters. All 7 sisters are about the same size, and all have put on some weight over the years, but none are huge. Only one of them has diabetes. I was not overweight 5 years ago, but I slowly put it on. Even so, I wasn't grossly obese by any stretch of the imagination (I wore a size 12-14 at my largest). But around 5 years ago I felt my body getting sluggish. I was eating the way I always had, but I was always tired. I started putting on weight around the waist, which was unheard of for me. I've always been a " pear, " but I was becoming an " apple. " I even wondered if I had some kind of tumor growing in my abdomen. I think all of these were signs that my body was not working properly. Anyway, here's the article if anyone is interested. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A28032-2002Mar27.html Christy
