Guest guest
I have swelling and fluid retention in my feet and ankles with RA. And I think some of the meds may make it worse at times. Sometimes I have to take a diuretic. Joy <cook.nicole@...> wrote: I seem to have lots of fluid retention and am wondering if it can be related to my RA or Hashimoto's? I am sero-negative RA and also have been having some problems getting my thyroid treated correctly. I go back tomorrow to my Rheumy to check my thyroid levels and start treatment for my RA. I have no idea what he will give me, but I have been on steroids, many NSAIDs, Flexerall, and such over the past year. My doc has been hesitent to treat me for RA until my thyroid is better controlled. I take Armour, and I really think I may need to switch to something else. I can NOT lose weight no matter what I do, and I also am retaining way too much fluid, as evidenced by edema in my legs. Advice? Thanks! Guest guest
I am on armour I was on synthetics at first didn't do much. I did find that at first they did not put me on enough I take 4-5 grains a day. I have swelling around my ankles really bad, I am not sure what it is from. I know what you mean until I got my dose right I was also not loosing weight, I also want to tell you everybody is different I need more than the doctors would recommend but it works for me. Since both diseases makes you tired it is hard to know which one is the culprit. It is so hard with dealing both all the time. I know what you are going through I have been there myself, but once I got all the meds right I started feeling better. I still have a ways to go but I am taking each day at a time. Guest guest
Hi Joy, I was on a diuretic but it did not help me at all. I know my father and grandmother have the same thing so I guess it goes with the RA was not sure if it was the RA or the Hashimoto's disease so you have helped clear this up. Guest guest
I, too, take some OTC diuretics, but they really don't seem to be helping much. I drink tons of water, and have been doing weight watchers for a month. I have lost a whopping 4 lbs in a whole month...it is sooooo discouraging. I am 40lbs heavier than I'd like to be and am just so depressed over not being able to lose any weight. I know if I could actually feel better and exercise it would help, but I would have thought I'd have lost at least 12 or so pounds by now. I did the breast cancer 3-day 3 years ago, and now I can barely walk up the stairs at work. I feel like a 37 year old on the inside, but an 80 year old on the outside! I am going to ask about the fluid retention tomorrow, and post any information I get. Thanks for the empathy! > > Hi Joy, > I was on a diuretic but it did not help me at all. Guest guest
Yes! I'm also constantly thirsty. I've been blaming in on Prednisone, but since I'm weaning off with no relief of symptoms, I wonder... Paige
Guest guest
Probably Hashi's, that is a typical symptom. If you are still have symptoms then you probably need to raise you Armour. Everyone is different in the amount that is needed. I'm not sure how long you have been on Armour, but it can time a little time. If you have low ferritin(blood stores) that can inhibit you thyroid meds from working well. You need to make a list for you doctor all off the symptoms you are having. In the beginning of my thyroid treatment I would write in all down weekly and show it to my doctor. You can email me privately is you want to talk more about thyroid. Guest guest
I'm on 4 grains. My swelling didn't go away until around 3 grains. It is hard to figure which is which, but writing it down helps. I finally have a diagnosis of AS, not RA. I love this list for all of the info. I'll be starting Remicade as soon as the insurance paperwork get finish, they say next week. Guest guest
Hi guys: I have RA and Hashimoto also and have always had problems retaining fluid, especially in my ankles. It is aggravated, I believe, by the Pred I am taking. I use a diuretic too, but the most important thing is to drink lots of water or clear liquids. I drink at least 1 ½ gallons daily and it really helps with the retention. Guest guest
Hi everyone, I've been reading about RA and hypothyroidism. I was wondering if you are diagnosed with hypo, is it just hypothyroidism, or is it hashimoto disease? I'm not familiar with hashi. I went for years possibly 10 or more with hypo before it was finally diagnosed. I finally went to my doctor and told her that I just felt icky. I told her that I couldn't put my finger on it, but that I felt just icky. She, my GP doctor ran tests and it came back as hypo-thyroidism. Later I found out that my brittle hair and hair loss, eyebrow loss, sensitivity to cold, and very dry skin, and weight gain, bloating and fatigue were all symptoms of being hypo. SO, I just wondered if it means that I have hashimoto disease or just hypo. I don't know that it matters, I was just wondering. I've been diagnosed with RA in the last 6 months and still trying to figure out the right meds that work for me. Thanks again, Les > Hi guys: > > > > I have RA and Hashimoto also and have always had problems retaining fluid, > especially in my ankles. It is aggravated, I believe, by the Pred I am > taking. Guest guest
Thanks Marsha, I have RA, sjournes (sp) and hypothyroidism, so I'm very intereted to learn what I can about all this auto immune disease stuff. Since newly diagnosed with RA, I want to learn all I can. Thanks again, Les > > Hi , > Hashimoto's disease is also an autoimmune disease it is your body attacking it. I was dignosed due to blood test and then a year later RA which is also an autoimmune disease so it could be Hashimoto's disease you may want to ask your doctor. > Hair loss usually goes along with a thyroid problem as well as tiredness which also goes along with RA. You can google Hashimoto's disease I made the doctor do an autoimmune disease that is how I knew but I had to push for the test. > > > Marsha > > > > > Re: [ ] Fluid retention? do you get it? > > > > I have swelling and fluid retention in my feet and ankles with RA. > > And I think some of the meds may make it worse at times.
