Guest guest
OK this gets even more confusing. When an area gets a new area code there are 2 ways of adding it. The first way is to split the existing area code so now there are 2 with a dividing line. For example the existing area code is 111 and they added 222. If you are making a call within those area codes you dial 7 digits. If you are in one dialing a number in the other you dial 10 digits. BUT there is another way of doing it - an overlay. Using the above area codes 111 was the existing code. 222 is overlaid. Let's say someone moves to the area and sets up their phone service. They would get a number with a 222 area code when their neighbours have a 111 area code. You can even get households with 2 area codes. In this situation ALL local calls are 10 digits - even when the area code isn't changing (like the Denver metro area.) Guest guest
I did know what you meant... but with stuff moving around so much here in the last three years, everyone is pretty much trying to get into the habit of ten digits, period... If were home 763 is 'local'. If I head into town, then it's 612, if I call from a pay phone, then I have to dial the 763... My pager is out of the 651 area... so if I'm in any area other then that I have to dial the 651... it's just such a mess, trying to remember what part of town your in.. what is the area code that you are in.. what is the area code you are calling... do you need 7 or 10 digits? With a cell phone, the calling from area code is always the same... but if you're used to dialing a number from the house phone.. the area code of the cell phone is different from the area code of the house phone.. so there you have it again... 7 digits from home 10 digits from the cell, or vice versa.... I don't think the way that they did it was so hot.. they should have left all existing numbers the same.. and then added new numbers with the new area codes.. then everyone one would only have to adjust new numbers.. NOT EVERY NUMBER FOR EVERY BODY!!!! eeeeekkkkkkkk! We get wrong numbers from one of the other area codes alot.. well more before then now.. The gal is elderly and her friends sure like her.. but they get the area codes mixed up and call us... the horrid part is that they are all long distance! She got a call last spring, it was her birthday.. the call was from Ireland? someplace up that away.. the guy's accent was great.. we talked a bit after I explained that area code thing.. he got the number right and called his aunt... He called back once after that.. to thank me for being so kind and not just hanging up on him... or any of the other family members that had been having trouble getting the right area code after the third time they shift the codes around!!!!
