Guest guest Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 A bread with just 4 grams of carbs? They must be talking about net carbs. My body only works on those total carbs, not just the net carbs. I like those Atkins Morning Start breakfast bars. My favorite one is the apple crisp, which only has 13 grams of total carbs and only 2 net carbs. It goes great with a couple cups of coffee. Now when it comes to a lot of heavy lifting, I don't see how one could survive on 15 grams of carbs per meal like I am trying to do. You would have to eat a lot more carbs or else run out of energy to do any work at all. I love the taste of breads of all kinds, but I limit myself to only one slice at a meal, since it is the one food item I eat once or twice per day that contains the most carbs. Eating a slice of bread is today like eating a piece of cake. need some answers please, > > need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I > found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my low > carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also need > to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or > advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around > twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave them > alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 20, 2005 Report Posted March 20, 2005 the sack says total grams of carbs per slice is for point five. so I guess this means nine carbs in the bread if you are having a sandwich. glad to hear about the bars, think I will continue to have a bar for lunch now and then. it is hard to throw around those fifty to eighty pound logs all day and eat less then thirty carbs per meal. but I need to loose over one hundred pounds and control my blood sugar, so there for, guess I add better eat the right carbs that give me the most energy to work all day. thanks for the information. need some answers please, > > >> >> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I >> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my low >> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also need >> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or >> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around >> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave them >> alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 please explain what you mean by going in to a reaction. could be I have had some feelings like this before a week ago, but didn't really know what it was. I don't take any medicine of any kind at this time, so if I were to have an reaction, because of loosing energy, I really wouldn't know what to do about it. one day last week, I was eating thirty carbs for breakfast and dinner both, but only fifteen at lunch. right before lunch, I started feeling real cold and couldn't get warm fast enough. also I was having a nervest kind of feeling. I usually don't take my meter to work with me, cause it is pretty dirty up there and I really never have had a reason to take my sugar at work before. I figure that part of the problem was that since I have to be at work around six a m, I leave the house a bit before that and usually eat my breakfast around four-30 a m. but the problem is, lunch isn't until noon. I realize this is a long time in between, but I have never had a problem getting hungry before and being type two diabetic, I really don't have to eat at a special time each day. now I have a snack at my first brake at nine- 30 and it has seemed to help with the shakes and getting that cold feeling all over. I have never heard of a type two diabetic having a reaction, but you guys know better then I do about it. just was wondering what it is and what can I do if I do have a reaction? thanks for your help. need some answers please, > > >> >> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I >> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my low >> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also need >> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or >> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around >> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave them >> alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 There are a couple of reactions you can get as a diabetic. It sounds as though you were having a low glucose reaction, but there is no way to tell for sure unless you do a glucose monitor test. As a type 2 diabetic and not insulin dependent, I use to have lots of those low glucose reactions. I solved it with a candy bar or fruit juice, neither of which I would recommend today. Those particular remedies get you out of the low glucose reaction, but swing your glucose levels up in to the 200 and 300 level quite easily, and those you definitely need to avoid. Today I would recommend using glucose tablets, which boost your glucose level by specific amounts for each tablet used, usually around 20 points or so for each tablet. This will keep you from spiking that glucose level. The second reaction you can get is the rebound effect. This happens when your normal glucose level is depleted of sugar and goes too low by doing strenuous exercise or hard work for an extended period of time, usually an hour or more, causing your glucose level to go to low and making the automatic survival mechanism in the body kick in and create more glucose from the fat or protein, I forget which, by having the glucogon hormone activated. This, too, can cause your glucose level in the blood stream to skyrocket to high levels, and when mine gets over 170 or so, it makes me feel tired, exhausted and draggy. The cure for this latter reaction in my case is first testing and then dosing Humalog accordingly to bring my glucose level back down to normal levels. need some answers please, >> >> >>> >>> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I >>> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my >>> low >>> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also >>> need >>> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or >>> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around >>> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave >>> them >>> alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Mark, As I said you were probably having a low blood glucose reaction, and if you eat some sugar like a glucose tablet or a life saver or two and about twenty minutes later that uncomfortable feeling goes away, then this is another way to tell that it was a low blood glucose level reaction without having to test. I use to get the shakes, cold feeling and even break out in sweats whenever I had them. In fact I still do most of the time. Us type 2 diabetics can feel good about having these reactions, because it warns us that something is not right. I hear lots of type 1 diabetics do not have these reactions at all, and go from normal level right on pass the low glucose level right to the passing out point before they realize something is not right. I am glad to hear you get that reaction warning. need some answers please, >>> >>> >>>> >>>> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I >>>> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my >>>> low >>>> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also >>>> need >>>> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or >>>> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around >>>> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave >>>> them >>>> alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Mark, As Harry said, it sounds like you were having a low glucose level. You can carry some glucose tabs with you in a small tube (found at most drug stores) and eat one or 2. If you have this high energy job, you probably do need that mid-morning snack to keep your sugars up.. Just eat less carbs on your days off though or your BG wil go up too high! Re: need some answers please, please explain what you mean by going in to a reaction. could be I have had some feelings like this before a week ago, but didn't really know what it was. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 Maybe you could be getting the shakes because your body hasn't got enough energy in it to sustain you for the amount of physical work you do. from down under need some answers please, > > > > > >> > >> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I > >> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my low > >> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also need > >> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or > >> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around > >> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave them > >> alone as well. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 If you are performing physical labor as the name of your job implies, I would think 30 carbs is perhaps not enough to supply your energy needs. Excercise and insulin both burn up blood sugar, and as long as your weight is where it should be and your blood sugar readings are good, you should eat however many carbs you can tolerate to keep your bodies energy needs met. Maybe increasing some fat intake, such as peanuts would be a more sustained or prolonged energy source. The key would be to make sure your weight is where it should be, your bg is where it should be, and the extra food is healthy. Dave Dave need some answers please, need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my low carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also need to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave them alone as well. I get tired of always taking the same thing for lunch every day and these bars make it easy and some thing different for lunch. also I work on a saw line at work, where we handle heavy wood all day long. it is important that I eat thirty carbs per meal, in order to have the strength to do all the heavy lifting that I do during the day? I find it is easier to loose weight if I actually eat less then thirty carbs per meal. how ever, when I cut down to twenty or less per meal, I feel a bit weak and get more tired faster. as long as I contin ue to control my carb in take per meal, I do feel better and can control my blood sugar, but if I throw my good sense to the wind and eat like every one else, I am the one who pays for my bad decisions. I agree with Harry, I just love corn bread and butter milk. but those days are gone. butter milk has thirteen carbs per eight ozes. some times I still enjoy a eight oze glass for breakfast, but eight ozes isn't very much. oh well, life does go on and we must learn a new way of eating or live with bad health if we make bad eating choices. especially when we know better. I am always here and listening. so keep the good post coming and sooner then later, I will get it right. God bless you all and have a blessed week. Quote

Guest guest Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Now here is just a small bit of information on carbs to maybe shed some light on your situation. Our body functions at its best when we enjoy a diet high in Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential fuel for the brain, red blood cells and growing foetus and a main source of energy for our muscles. - Carbohydrate is the only source of fuel our brain can use. 50% of our energy requirements unlike muscle cells, that can burn both carbohydrates and fats, the brain doesn't have the mechanism. Our bodies run on fuel just like a car runs on petrol So every day we need to top up the tank with the right amount and the right kind of fuel for health, energy and well being. Starting at Breakfast time. " Carbohydrates contribute so much to the bulk of our diet, that many people mistakenly think they are " fattening " and avoid them when trying to loose weight However this can be counter productive. People can better control weight by selecting foods that are high in Carbohydrate's, high in fibre and limiting fats (especially saturated, and participating in daily physical activity or just plain move more. ** I suppose it can depend on what sort of food you choose to eat for your meals and what is convenient to take at your work place. Maybe some fruit, banana or apple. Have a couple slices of multigrain bread with a slice of meat or salad or what ever else you may prefer, Or have a couple small pita bread with a low filling of some sort. Tuna, ricotta cheese, egg and so on. To help with losing weight you may need to eat foods that are more low in fat. Consider making a record of the foods you eat and then take stock at the end of the day or a week and see where you might be able to make a change in your diet. It could also be used to make notes when you are having your dizzy and shaking spells. Have you had your blood pressure checked out because that could be another thing to consider. You can make simple changes to your diet like: full cream milk to a low fat milk. White bread to multigrain or raisin bread. yoghurt to a diet brand cheese to a low fat cheese fill up with plenty fruit, salads, vegetables. cut down on the size of meat cuts the average of meat for a person is about 120 grams. A myth I heard that a cut of meat should be the size of your clenched fist!! don't eat too many peanuts - they are low in carbs but high in fats. measure a 1/4 cup and only have them once or twice a week. These are just a few hints on ways to make changes and may help to contribute to losing some weight. from down under Re: need some answers please, > > you very well could be right, but how do I loose over one hundred pounds, if > I eat more, because of the kind of work I do? seems like a loosing battle. > eat more to have energy, but if I eat less to use up my all ready saved up > carbs, which are extra fat, I get the shakes. thanks for the advice. think I > may eat a few more carbs during the day and see how I feel. > ----- Original Message ----- Quote

Guest guest Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 A few more carbs, but less meat will lower your caloric intake, but will let your energy level keep up. You are burning up carbs with all the exercise you do, but it is lowering your energy, so you have to cut down somewhere else. Guest guest Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Not knowing what your work conditions are, perhaps some of your weakness has to do with sweating a lot. You need to replenish the, um, I think electrolights and perhaps potassium? Not sure about those, but hard working muscles rely on the proper chemeical balance and if you're not eating properly you may be weak for that reason and not as much due to low bgs. I forget if you said you check your blood sugars frequently while you're at work. This would be very important if you want to figure out what is going on. Many years ago, long before I lost my sight, I used to work for a furniture store delivering furniture. You never knew just what to expect and it was almost impossible to be prepared consistently. Maybe we had a bedroom suite to deliver, king size bedding included, and maybe it would go to the second floor. But, you never knew. Sometimes the bedroom was on the first floor and it was an easy 30 foot walk and the furniture was carried in with relative ease and you were out of there having not even worked up a sweat. I can attest to the difficulty in being diabetic and having a physically demanding job and encourage you to hand in there. Dave Dave Re: need some answers please, you very well could be right, but how do I loose over one hundred pounds, if I eat more, because of the kind of work I do? seems like a loosing battle. eat more to have energy, but if I eat less to use up my all ready saved up carbs, which are extra fat, I get the shakes. thanks for the advice. think I may eat a few more carbs during the day and see how I feel. need some answers please, >> > >> > >> >> >> >> need to know about this low carb bread at the health food store that I >> >> found. it is rye and has four carbs per slice. is it ok to eat, on my > low >> >> carb diet or should I leave it alone because it is still bread? also > need >> >> to know about these low carb meal bars or snack bars. like Atkins or >> >> advantage. some of them have twenty carbs and others only have around >> >> twelve or less. are these low carb bars are to eat or should I leave > them >> >> alone as well.
