Effects of Fish Oils on Lipid Profile

Summary: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study

involving 312 adults between the ages of 20 and 70 years of age,

consumption of fish oil (in doses of 0.7 g/d EPA+DHA, and 1.8 g/d

EPA+DHA) was found to be associated with 8% and 11% lower plasma

concentrations of triglycerides in the study population as a whole. When

the data was broken down by sex and genotype, fish oil was found to

exert the greatest triglyceride-lowering effect in men with the APOE4

genotype - with a 15% reduction after 0.7 g/d EPA+DHA, and a 23%

reduction after 1.8 g/d EPA+DHA. After supplementation with fish oil,

reductions in VLDL cholesterol and increases in LDL, HDL, and HDL2

cholesterol concentrations were found. The authors conclude,

" Supplements providing EPA+DHA at doses as low as 0.7 g/d have a

significant effect on the plasma lipid profile. "
