Guest guest
> Of course, after he hanged himself everybody >decided he wasn't working the program right. I've been wanting to write here about this subject for a while and that sentence is the perfect lead-in. Maybe some of you folks who've been on the XA merry-go-round longer than I did can give me some insight about something. Just what in tarnation is meant by " working the program " ? " Working " the steps? In my mind these " Steps " just didn't take a whole lot of what I would think of as work. Just a lot of silly list making which focuses on all the shit which it isn't that healthy to focus on. The 9th step (making amends to people you screwed as long as it won't screw them up) is the only one of the steps that actually seems to involve any legitimate work effort. The rest of it seems to be a big mess of humbling yourself. Maybe " working " the steps just implied the arduous mental process of beating this crap into your head by beating yourself down to its level? You succeed when you have finally accomplished the fine art of hating yourself so much that you think anything good in your life is absolutely nothing more (or less) than a precious gift from the Big Guy Upstairs that dared to save a wretch like you. Or is there more to it than this? I rather doubt not. -dmt demitria monde thraam transmits at: http://thraam.com
Guest guest
No one knows what it means to " work the program " . There's no consistent answer. Here's my spin... the rewards of working the program are flat emotional affect, and the gift of pious arrogance which allows one to look down upon anyone who has strong emotions -- these would be anything other than gratitude & serenity. I once heard it described that we should consider the steps in everything we do. Before I select a can of Spaghetti-Os from the supermarket shelf, I should be aware of whether my choice hurts anyone, and whether it is in accordance with the will of God, and so on. The implication is that if I operate in line with the will of God, nothing bad will ever befall us. But if it does, it is really a blessing in disguise, a lesson from God, for which I should be grateful. apple > I've been wanting to write here about this subject for a while and that sentence is the perfect > lead-in. Hi Apple, The paradox here is that while no one knows what it means to " work the program " steppers sure are quick to accuse someone of " NOT working the program " . To me it has always seemed like the blueprint for a multi-level marketing or pyramid scheme. Convince someone you have a sure way for them to succeed in something or make money, etc. Tell them what to do. If they fail you simply explain to them that they're " not working the program " . Guest guest
Working the program is similar to working a job. Its just as bad! No, that old saying " it works if you work it " describes a 5 point plan of action spelled out on most Token clubs: -don't drink, go to meetings, call your sponsor, read the big book and keep coming back. Do they have a grade for who is working the program well? In some ways. Usually, the person with the most sobriety time gets the best grade from others. And people who have worked all 12 steps get special recognition. If you want extra credit, you can help set up meetings, fix coffee, form social events, sponsor someone. The possibilities are endless. If only the program actually worked. There big slogan is " keep it simple, stupid. " Unfortunately, there's nothing simple about AA. Its not as easy as don't drink, come to our meetings for one year and then come back only when you need them. Instead, its " come back until the day you die. " In AA, " works " basically means doing exactly what they tell you do and not asking why. And for a lot of newcomers who are in a lot of trouble legally, financially and personally: that can sound easy enough. Guest guest
Anne- From what I can gather, it sounds like you need something 'concrete' to help you heal. There are lots of other support groups like " Rational Recovery " ... " Women For Sobriety " ... " Moderation Management " . These are a few non-12-step support groups. If you can't find anything like this, keep talking to the list. I have found it to be very therapeutic and feel like this list (12-step-free) understands myself and my struggles more than anyone else. We are all in the same " boat " . When you feel like sharing your issues, I believe you will not be critized, but you will get a warm response from people on the list. I have been through LOTS of therapy, psych stuff, etc. I am on disability because I have recurrant major depression. I LOVE this list! I have discovered that I don't have to resort to a rigid, dogmatic, lifestyle like AA wants you to do. If you want to talk more, please feel free to e-mail me. Take care - ~Trixxi Re: working the program > > > >Hey all. Been busy, but had to respond to " working the program " . Life > >has it's share of ups and downs, don't ya know.
