Guest guest Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I am not sure if I have asked this before on this message board but I do have a question regarding my daughter’s experience with antibiotics. At two weeks she was put on a daily dose of antibiotics for bladder reflux and was on that until she was about 6 or 7 months when the doctor was concerned about her lack of growth. She went from being on the growth chart down to being off it in two months and he was very concerned. She was not on any cereal at all and the only thing she was taking other than breast milk was the antibiotics. Then when she was about 8 months old we had her on another one that the doctor had her on one that was 3 times the amount she should have had. I know from my other children’s experiences that antibiotics are very hard on their tummies and they have a hard time digesting food. After continual phone calls to the doctor about it and his not listening that the antibiotic was not working we finally headed to a Children’s hospital to do a procedure that was to have fixed the problem but didn’t. So when she was 1 ½ we finally were able to take her off the antibiotics and she did okay for a short time before she was so sick again. So now with all the background my question is could these antibiotics have caused the CD or is this just coming out at the same time. Also she had 2 out patient surgeries, 2 Nuclear Medicine test, and several VCUGs. She was sedated for these test using both Chloral Hydrate and Versed. We had a much better experience with the Versed and she was not all out of sorts with it like she was with the other one. So I know she has had the stress triggers and she must have had the predisposition for it but could the over dose of antibiotics been another stress trigger/cause? She is doing much better now and off all antibiotics! She is also scheduled to see a new GI doctor since her other one decided to up and leave with no notice and since it has been a year since we have seen a urologist we will follow up with one as well. Has anyone had to put their children on daily dose of antibiotics for conditions with CD and did it cause any problems? With your children? Thanks for reading this and any answers anyone else might have. Quote
Guest guest Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 I, too, wonder if antibiotics can make an undiagnosed gluten problem much worse. I had a scheduled huge round of them (following a major surgery, partly on ileum part of intestines, with blood transfusion which has gluten, and then I lost 50 pounds instead of the expected 20 pounds).
