Bill and Pat,

Not only are we bombarded with advertisement showing the " comfort " foods

we are also told that these foods are also available in a sugar-free,

low-fat, low-carb form which is good for our bodies. We all know about

the sugar free items and what they really are.

Low carb is big money right now and there are no federal regulations

governing what constitutes a low carb item. The " net " carb items are

really, in my opinion, fraudulent advertising.

I nailed some time ago when she was munching away on some low

carb snack of some sort. She told me that this snack was actually good

for her because it contained very, very few net carbs. After

investigating the ingredients listing I think she did understand where

the problem was.

Oh yes, and by the way, anyone try the new sugar free cherry Dr. Pepper?

Crystal brought some home and said she would have to be very careful

when drinking it because she got a real kick out of it. It is made with

Aspartame and seems to really be loaded up with it. I don't like it as

it has that infamous Aspartame after taste.

Oh well, I think we will be able to see where is in about a

month. That will find her about three months into the Job Corps routine.

Do take care and brace yourselves for the Christmas onslaught.

One additional note about teen snacks and overeating in general, is that

most of us are bombarded daily with TV ads about -- guess what --

feel-good foods. These tug at our heartstrings and our appetites and

make us crave more than what we normally need. We are made to feel that

if we don't buy all kinds of junk food, we will be missing out on

something.

One of the things I did many years ago when thinking about fries is I

started visualizing them for what they are -- sticks of lard. Would I

pick up a stick of lard and eat it? I don't think so. The other part of

the equation there was that I told myself that while I do like the taste

of some fries, I really don't want to wear them around my middle, which

is where they'd wind up. So when I do eat at a fast food joint, and when

the meal comes with fries (I don't order them otherwise, period) I pick

a number between 1 and 10, that's the number of fries I will eat and

then throw out the rest. Oh do I get strange looks when I throw out

fries. I just tell people " I'd rather do that than wear them. " That

usually shuts 'em up.

hope will instill a new set of habits.

Once a year I get the can of pop corn.

The one with cheese in it.

Love that stuff.

I know we can eat one cup that has been in all diets I have known about.

Has anyone seen this before?

ok don't yell at me because I am learning and this is the reason why I

joined the group.

I feel most of the junk that they have out for diabetics is junk.

I would just drink a pop once a week if that is what is wanted then say that

is the sugar for the day.

Like I say I am just learning.

For those just learning or veterans who do not know how, the most important

thing a diabetic can do is learn how to count carbs. Why do I say this?

You may ask. Insulin does not work on protein. Insulin does not work on

fat. Insulin works only on carbohydrates.

If you would like a carb counter guide via email just let me know, and I

will send you one that was prepared by a fellow list member.

Dar,

Read the labels carefully.

Many items claim they are dietetic, not diabetic.

Lots of the " sugar free " and " low carb " claim to be for dietetic use. If

you happen to be just scanning the product you can easily think it said

it was for Diabetics.

You are correct, lots of the current craze marketing is just nonsense. I

believe it was the May or June Consumer Reports which had an article on

the low carb and low sugar products. It is worth reading.

Dar, nice thing about this list is that no one is going to yell at you.

Man, if they can put up with me they can put up with anyone.

yep, that popcorn is wonderful. I have a problem with it as it often comes

with the carmel corn too-and that is really hard to resist! I try to give

away so I won't eat the carmalized one!

I have never read anything on a diabetic wrapper.

Just going on some Braille books that I used to have saying that pop corn is

ok one cup.

I have to have a doughnut at least once every six month.

Don't think that will kill me yet, and if it did boy what a good way to go

to heaven smile.

I still don't know for sure if I have this problem or not.

My sweetie eats that one.

With dentures that gets under my plates too much so I don't bother with it.

Don't care for that one much.

Dar,

The reason I made the point about " Dietetic " is that when someone

sighted reads things to you in the store they quite often just scan the

words and commonly think they are reading " Diabetic " .

In today's Madison Avenue hype it is awfuly easy to become completely

bumfuzzled....

Yes but that " sweetened shortening " is sure good when they add the

flavoring to it!!!

I use this technique when I am in the presence of cake or cream filled donuts.

I think about the icing, for what it really is, that being sweetened shortening

most of the time. I really lose a lot of interest in it realizing I am putting

a big bite of cooking shortening in my mouth.

most of us are bombarded daily with TV ads about -- guess what -- feel-good

foods. These tug at our heartstrings and our appetites and make us crave

more than what we normally need. We are made to feel that if we don't buy

all kinds of junk food, we will be missing out on something.

the rest. Oh do I get strange looks when I throw out fries. I just tell

people " I'd rather do that than wear them. " That usually shuts 'em up.

will instill a new set of habits.

Well Dave, just look at it this way;

The Christmas baking onslaught is rapidly approaching so we all need to

brace ourselves for it.

When you smell that all too familiar aroma wafting out of the kitchen

just remember that it is a sinister tactic to mask the true contents.

What it covers up is the fact that you are really only smelling some

dry, bland tasting flour, some Sodium Chloride which has a very strong

and harsh taste as well as a number of other ingredients such as

Cinnamon which is actually very bitter and hot.

Some folks try to combine these ingredients in a particular manner to

entice you to partake of them.

These items also contain another ingredient commonly called " sugar "

which is the epitome of caloric gluttony and the primary carrier of the

Trojan Horse, Carbohydrate.

Be staunch in your resistance to this awful threat and, should you need

assistance in removing this menace from your home feel free to call upon

me at any time.

I have a fully trained crew who can safely remove these threats in a

discrete and professional manner.

well now, I don't eat every day like I should and I do realize that it is no

one's fault but mine. how ever, the other day, I made sixteen pecan pies and

didn't par take of not one of them. use to, I could have ate one whole pie

by my self before the rest of the pies cooled enough to put in the ice box.

I passed them out to all my friends, who are not, as of yet, a diabetic as I

am. even made the wife some sausage balls and a cheese ball and still didn't

help my self to any. some days I find being a good boy easier then other

days. some times I get up in the morning and tell my self that to day I am

going to be good and keep control of my sugar and not eat any thing that I

shouldn't. this doesn't always work. the best laid plans, just doesn't

always pan out. the only good reason why I half way stay on the right path,

is can scare the hell out of me with some of those post that he can

write about eat wrong and die young or wish you were dead. ok, I suppose I

am done with my ramble for now and will go eat some thing good for me,

instead of some thing else that isn't. I just love Mexican food, and right

now that really sounds good with a cold beer or two. best eat a salad and

turn in to a fat rabbit. keep the post coming that will keep me on line and

maybe I won't for get that I am a diabetic. thanks for all of you.
