In regard to how Whole Grain White is made, Uncle Ben's starts with 100

percent whole grain brown rice (long grain parboiled rice), mills it and

adds back the rice bran and germ in its unique and natural way. It contains

the three components of whole grains – partially milled brown rice

endosperm, rice bran and germ – in the same proportion they exist in whole

grain brown rice, fulfilling the FDA’s definition of whole grains.

Just one serving is a good source of fiber and contains nearly the daily

recommended amount of whole grains.

Additionally, Whole Grain White Rice and whole grain brown rice contain

similar amounts of the following nutrients: calories, fat, carbohydrates,

sodium, potassium and protein. The Whole Grain White Rice product line

delivers a good source of fiber due to the addition of inulin (natural

chicory root fiber) while having the taste and texture of white rice. The

product is also enhanced with niacin, thiamin, folic acid and iron to help

consumers more easily meet their daily requirement of these nutrients.

Give me a BREAK! I hope as RDs we clearly recognize that there is NO

legal definition of " natural. " Refining the germ and bran off, BREAKING up

the germ and exposing the fat to oxygen increases oxidation and rancidity of

the grain. Rancid fats are carcinogenic! You cannot refine a grain and add

back the bran and germ and consider it anything the SAME as the " whole

grain. "

I think Uncle Ben's just LOST a client in me. (Not that I've purchased any

of their products in a long, long time anyway, that I recall. . . )

On the surface, one would say, eat the Uncle Ben's.

But here's the thing, to me, anyway -- I would rather Uncle Ben's be

upfront about their production methods. People would have realistic

information upon which to make the decision on whether or not to eat

brown rice. How do we know that the production process does not result

in a product that is, perhaps, WORSE than eating white rice?

Well, I believe at this point in time I would have to say given only those 2

choices you propose--white rice or the new product--I have to choose

unadulterated white rice (and work with the person to think about

incorporating more brown rice in their diet by perhaps mixing white and

brown for a while, etc other improvements that lead to change in desires

down the road). Do we all remember how we were supposed to recommend

margarine over butter because it has more " healthy " unsaturated fat, and

indeed it does? Took 10+ years, but then we realized the unsaturated fat,

which had to be " partially hydrogenated " to make the product, was worse for

us than butter with the double-whammy of raising LDL cholesterol and

lowering HDL cholesterol, not to mention all of the subsequent information

linking trans fatty acids from the hydrogenation process to a host of

additional degenerative diseases.

, I see your question akin to me asking you " would you rather they had

butter or margarine if they won't eat olive oil " ? Same thing--we argue a

mute point if we only discuss margarine or butter with them when the

healthiest choice is olive oil. Won't eat olive oil? Fine, start with my

" Better Butter " recipe--1/2 butter, 1/2 olive oil (another 1/2 again water

if they like) with a squirt of honey.

Ultimately I don't have any huge gripes with clients eating Uncle Ben's

whole grain white rice IF we educate our clients what they are getting in it

and that there are better choices. However, I agree with others here that

the deceptive advertising is enough for me to not recommend the product to

increase their profits!
