,

I hope you are feeling better.

Our 3 year old has been GF since she was 19 months old (due to

confirmed Celiac Diease through blood panel of the 5 tests and a

confirmed endoscopy where they biopsied 6 segments of her intestinal

lining).

She has accidentally gotten gluten in her system twice during that

timeframe. A relative accidentally gave her about one cup of Kraft

Mac & Cheese, and our little SillyYak experienced almost two weeks

of extreme diarrhea and projectile vomiting again, along with

extreme irritability, inability to sleep, cramping, and she was

literally digging at her tummy trying to get the pain to stop. (it

was awful). I had two batches of mac & cheese made in the fridge

(one Kraft and one GF, and the relative accidentally gave her the

wrong one). Since that episode, I am a " label nut " and put special

labels on every single food in the house that is " safe " so this

won't happen again. Our daughter had been GF for about 1-2 months

when this episode happened.

The other episode was just a few months ago when her pre-school went

on a field trip to a local library for storytime. Her school is

absolutely incredible with adhering to the diet and only feeding her

what I send in, will call me on my cell if they have any questions

at all, they use GF playdough that I have supplied, etc. They are

amazing (and follow a kosher diet in the school too, which helps).

Anyway, during the field trip, we suspect that she must have gotten a

hold of a gluten containing cracker or something, b/c she

experienced the same symptoms I mentioned above, but it lasted for

about 4-5 days.

I think everyone has different types and severity of reactions.

Some people eat gluten (accidentally or " sneak " ) it and think it's

okay b/c they didn't " react. " Well, all it takes is a speck to

cause intestinal damage. I read a study that gluten the size of a

crouton is enough to actually damage the intestine.

I'm sure others have had different stories about their reactions,

but these are two that I can share. I hope you feel better soon.

Keeping a food diary is a GREAT idea... I did that for our daughter

too and it was very helpful. Keep doing that, and introduce only

one food at a time (For a few days at a time). There is a

possibility that maybe you have some other food intolerance(s) in

addition to Celiac Disease. Let's hope not, though.

Hang in there! It sounds like your girlfriend is very supportive.

It's nice to have others around who are willing to help in any way

they can. Take care!

So I guess then that it is entirely possible for me to have gotten

gluten and keep getting sick from that one source for a few days. I

have found that I am VERY sensative to gluten and I react to almost

any trace amount I have come across. I do know that I have other

food sensativities because I cannot eat caesine or soy either. Over

the past two weeks there have been a few days that I woke up feeling

ok and thought " ok i'm going to keep it bland - tostitos " and then

ended up sick again later that day after feeling FINE in the

morning. If I can attribute the past two weeks to Frito-lay I would

be extatic!! Emmy got teary-eyed after reading your post and

said " Oh my what if its just Frito-lay, what if that's it!? I'd be

sooo happy! "

*sigh* so, I haven't had any Frito-lay products since Wednesday. I

woke up this morning after sleeping through the night with no

problems. I'm still feeling " ok " as I write this. I am sticking to

rice noodles and apple sauce for a few days. Oh how I hope its just

Frito-Lay!! At this point I dont care what it is I just want to

know so I can make it stop. Whether it turns out to be Frito-lay or

not I'm not going back to Frito-lay, I have read and heard way to

many bad stories this past week since researching Frito-lay.

Your an amazing mom by the way! It's fabulous what your doing for

your daughter. I wish my parents had known what I had from age 3 (I

was sick most of my life but the doctors just kept saying " she has

the flu " or " nervous tummy " ). My family still sometimes thinks I'm

exaggerating when I get sick and it really hurts.

Anyway, thanks!!! Hopefully I'm on my way to recovery. I'm off to

make some rice noodles! :)
