Hi Cailleach,

I have thought of UAE with myomectomy, but not seriously. I never

remembered to ask my gyn about it. Her husband is the IR who declined

UAE for me because one of my fibroids is pedunculated.

My gyn is very nice. She is the gentlest gyn I ever had. I didn't

even feel the speculum when she did a pap test. She does not

pressure me to do anything. She said she can recommend other

surgeons if I don't want to use her. She said I can go to another

IR, like Dr. Kirsch in Philadelphia, for UAE if I so choose.

I am not a big risk-taker. Except with tech stocks, sigh. So I

thought one operation, hysterectomy, would be enough for me. I am

concerned about adhesions and scarring from the myomectomy. Also,

myomectomy does not prevent new fibroids from popping up. UAE with

myomectomy might prevent new fibroids from growing. But there is no

guarantee that the existing fibroids will shrink or shrink a whole

lot. (I look five months pregnant.) And there is no guarantee that

some of the fibroids might not have other blood sources.

By leaving the cervix, it will help support the vagina and the

bladder. By leaving the ovaries, I hopefully will get the hormones

that my body needs.

I don't remember ever feeling contractions in my uterus when I have

an orgasm. Also, where can I find the scientific research of the

chemicals that the uterus produces? I don't know where to find that

information. The first time I heard about it is from Greeneyes

posting of 11/03/00.

Is the uterus related to the chakra or qi or life force? Would I be

forever out of balance without my uterus?

I am also in the NY area. My surgeon is in NYC. I am 43 and had a

myomectomy on Oct 6. My gyn feels that the chances of fibroids

growing again are slim, since I am in my 40s and menopause (no more

estrogen feeding the fibroids) is around the corner. I went to him

as a last resort, certain that he would be the deciding vote for

hysterectomy. He talked me out of it. He is adamently against hyst

for benign fibroids.

I had fibroids, the largest was 13.7cm, endo and adenomyosis that he

was able to remove. I was back to work full time week 3 post-op and

feel fantastic now.

Please do tons of research and talk to as many women as you can

before you make a decision. Remember, hysterectomy is forever.

I have Aetna U.S. Healthcare. What do you have?

My gyn is with Cornell. May I ask who is your doctor? What hospital

is he affiliated with?

How long was the surgery? Was there complications? Did you lose a

lot of blood?

Why is he against hysterectomy? What is his argument?

At last count in August, I have 6 fibroids. My largest was 7.9 x

7.9cm. I'm sure they are all bigger now. My stomach is bigger, and

my pants are tighter. How many fibroids did you have removed?

That is wonderful that you went back to work week 3 post-op.

I have United Healthcare. My surgeons is Dr. Stanley West. He

wrote a book called " The Hysterectomy Hoax " .(I haven't read it.) You

can read more about him and fibroids at http://www.repmed.com/ . He

is affiliated with St. s Hospital (a wonderful facility).

My surgery was about 3 hours long - no complications. I think there

were only 2 fibroids, but the endo and adeno are more difficult to

remove. He is also meticulous with his sewing job. He uses

something called Cell Saver which recycles your own red blood cells,

so I did not need a transfusion. I have a 6 inch bikini incision

that currently looks like a thin pink line and my old jeans fit me

once more.

once in the Aetna directory but he is not in it. He doesn't appear

to be in the United Healthcare directory either. Is he out of

network for you? What was the total cost and what did you pay?

Did you see him at St. s Hospital or at his office on Madison

Avenue?

Since you have firsthand experience with him, I might consider going

to him for a second opinion (actually fourth). Even my IR

recommended hysterectomy.

Dr. West performed the surgery on me and seems to have done a great

job, so apparantly his hands are quite steady, regardless of his

age.

He has a number of residents under his wing who rave about him and

he is highly esteemed at the hospital. I discovered when I was in

the hospital, that people from all over the world seek him out.

As far as the cost and insurance is concerned, I can't really

answer that at this point. I think the initial consult was $350, but

the surgery bills are still somewhere in the insurance company.

I saw him at his office for the consult and post-ops. He is a

compassionate and very patient man who took the time to answer ALL of

my questions. (He even drew pictures to make sure I totally

understood.)

If you can, I highly recommend him - at the very least, for

a " second opinion " .

In a posting from 02/01/99 from Johanna Skilling who wrote

" Fibroids - The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical,

Emotional, and Sexual Well-Being " , she said Dr. Stanley West is

against UAE because it would " kill off " the uterus.

Have you ever discussed UAE with Dr. Stanley West? Is so, what is

his opinion now?

Also, how long did it take you to get an appointment with him?

What did he do for you for $350?

I will try to call his office tomorrow morning. I hope he is not

retired yet.

that it was not the right procedure for me. He said that the risk is

that the entire blood supply could be blocked, resulting in the need

for a hysterectomy.

I was fortunate and got an appointment within 3 wks of my initial

call. The first part of the visit was a consultation with my husband

and myself, then and exam, then more discussion. I found Dr. West to

be the most patient and compassionate doctor I have ever met.

quick. He is all booked up for surgery through January.
