Hi everybody! I was diagnosed with Celiac at the start of this year

and have been GF ever since. I am beginnig to feel SO MUCH BETTER

and am grateful for all of the help this group has given me and for

's hard work to make our group possible.

I am going to Cancun with my husband and family in 2 weeks and am a

little nervous since I haven't traveled since being GF. Has anyone

been to Cancun? Any restaraunt or grocery store suggestions? Any

plane flight suggestions? Where can I get a Spanish statement

explaining the disease and diet restrictions? Any good ideas of

food to bring down there with me? We will have a small

refrigerator, hot plate, and microwave so I do plan on bringing down

some food with us.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I have been so busy with finals

as I am in my Senior year of college majoring in recreation therapy.

I am just beginning to start to plan how we can make this trip to

Cancun as smooth and healthy as possible. I look forward to your

suggestions.

Love, in Utah

My husband and I went to Cancun on vacation last summer. There are many American restaurants and almost all hotel/reseraunt staff speak English. I know there is a Mc 's, but also remember several other chain restaurants. You should be able to find almost anything you can find here.

It's really hot so bring lots of sunscreen, GF of course! Have a great trip!

My husband and I love Mexico because I don't have to worry much about my gluten free diet down there. They don't use flour much at all and don't add sauces and gravies to their foods. I eat alot of grilled fish and grilled chicken. They serve rice with most meals which is fine, too.

I have learned to say "Sem Trego" which means "No Wheat" and they will understand that. I don't think they will know what gluten free means or celiac, but they will bend over backwards to do what you want.

We have been to Cancun the last two years in November and will be going again this coming October. We stay at the Royal Mayan or the Royal Carribean (these are timeshares) and we really love going there.

Sometimes I just see a grilled chicken sandwich on the menu and ask them to give me the chicken without the bread and add some french fries or veggies or rice with it and that works. I just did that last weekend in Memphis TN at the Peabody Hotel for lunch and it worked just great. The Manager of the restaurant at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis knew what celiac was. He even asked me if it was celiac and he took care of my lunch with the waiter.

Fortunately, tequila is gluten free so you can have margueritas in Mexico if you like them.

The corn chips and guacomole dips are fine. Just don't eat the flour tortillas and substitute the corn tortillas. The mexicans are not fancy with their foods so you don't have to worry so much that they have added unknown things to the dishes.

Have a great time in Cancun.
