The first ever Spring Break camp at SALM, the 20th anniversary of VACC camp, and the long awaited arrival of the M/V E. Pearson make April something to keep your eyes on. Enjoy, join and jubilate with us this month. April 1st, 6 – 8 pm KAYAK-A-THON Finale Celebration Support and applaud the kayakers who took a trip down the Intracoastal to raise money for Shake-A-Leg-Miami Paddlers are ready to party after their five day trip down the Intracoastal Waterway. Join us on April 1st, from 6 – 8 pm, at 2620 south Bayshore drive, coconut grove. Awards of a Bahamas trip for the first finisher and the largest fund raiser will be given out. This is a very physical event and your applause at the finale party will truly reiterate the worth of the journey. April 1st Summer Camp Summer Camp Enrollment Process Opens Shake-A-Leg Miami’s summer program enrollment opens on April 1st, 2006. Camp will run from June 5 through July 28th. SALMS' inclusionary camp lasts 8 weeks, with four sessions available for fee based participants. The camp capacity is 300 students, including mentors. The program focuses on student academics and social success through an immense variety of educational, recreational, and water sport activities. This camp is dynamic in its accessibility to all and its ability to make learning fun and engaging. Pearson Memorial Celebration Celebrating a Life and Launching the Legacy On behalf of the family and friends of E. Pearson and Graham Hooper, Shake-A-Leg Miami invites you to attend the dedication of M/V E. Pearson as we celebrate a life and launch a legacy on Saturday April 8, 2006 from 7 – 11 pm at Shake-A-Leg Miami. Join us for the dedication of the newly built M/V E. Pearson, auctions, raffles, dinner and dancing throughout the evening. Individual tickets are $50.00 and sponsorships are available. Funds will enable this vessel to become fully accessible and revive the personal dream of a disabled captain, Graham Hooper, and allow many other adults and children with disabilities to realize their dreams. April 9th, 7 - 11 pm VACC Camp 20th anniversary VACC camp returns to Shake-A-Leg Miami Participants with disabilities come from all over the country to this camp which is put on at Miami Children's Hospital. For a week, they stay at AD Park and participate in a variety of activities all over Miami---Shake-A-Leg Miami is one of their destination spots and needs additional volunteers to make this magical day happen. These participants are not only severely physically disabled, they are all dependent on ventilators! It is an incredible sight to see them interacting in our ecological environment here at SALM. They come with their families, nurses, friends etc. and they also come with a host of young teenage volunteers (POTENTIAL FUTURE SALM MENTORS!!!!) who are from the local area and who spend the entire week with these really cool kids. Shake-A-Leg Miami VACC camp outing is form 9:30 to 3:30 pm with a volunteer report time of 8:45 AM. April 10th – 14th Spring Break Camp Shake-A-Leg Miami’s first ever Spring Break Camp Shake-A-Leg Miami After School Program is pleased to host a Spring Break Camp during the week of public schools April Vacation. We don’t want your kids sitting around watching TV all day; we want to give them an opportunity to learn and have fun! Each morning, the students’ time will be split between classroom academics and fun, healthy activities – kayaking, sailing, canoeing, science lab, art, multimedia, and music! Each afternoon will find the students on an exciting adventure – Parrot Jungle, Biscayne Nature Center, and Fort Lauderdale Museum of Science and Discovery. The week’s events will be wrapped up at Kennedy Park for the Shake-A-Leg Olympics. April 12th MentorOrientation Teens change lives as mentors at summer camp Interested in being a mentor with us this summer, or know a teen who would? Our summer promises to be an amazing experience exploring the beauty of Biscayne Bay. The role of a mentor is a critical one as there are daily opportunities to change the lives of our participants this summer. Mentors work with all types of children with and without disabilities from a variety of backgrounds within the water, land, and academic experiences of Camp. Enrollment for mentors is now open. April 15th Moonlight Sail Sailing on Biscayne Bay by the light of the full moon In the Month of April, Saturday the 15th finds us closest to the full moon. Please consider yourself invited to enjoy a moonlit sail. This is your chance to spend your evening with the stars. Come join us and the celestial bodies at their finest. April 23rd Volunteer Appreciation Brunch Saluting our incredible volunteers during national Volunteer Appreciation Week Shake-A-Leg volunteers make up the life blood at our not-for-profit accessible water sports center and deserve to be saluted!
