Guest guest
, I am going to my neurosurgeon in August, and his blasted nurse is refusing to provide me with an interpreter! I called a place Friday called Advocacy, Inc. and they are supposed to help me. The guy at the interp. service said that usually one call from this company is usually all it took to make a doctor pay!! Donna
Guest guest
Barbara, The NS nurse said that they did not have to do that because the office was out of a school! Dr. Baskin is a professor from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. I was told this was ABSOLUTELY NOT true and this Advocacy is supposed to call the doctor's office and let them know that there would be grounds for me to sue if they refuse to provide me with an interpreter. Thanks for your concern!! Donna > Donna, > > On what grounds did the NS's nurse refuse to get an interp? Don't we have > the ADA behind us, that clearly states she cannot do this? > > Barbara B.???? Guest guest
Oh Donna, I forgot to tell you...I used to see Dr. Martuza at town University and I always had an interpreter. Allbeit, at the beginning of ADA, it used to be a lady from " records " who knew sign language. I think (hope) they've improved! Guest guest
Hi guys, I am totally deaf. I didn't have a nurse who could ign after surgery. Family was there BUT we brought a dry eraser board with bright markers cause it is true you can't focus real well after surgery. Nurses and Dr's wrote to me on the board. When I was moved from ICU they had one on my wall that everyone used. Noone made a fuss about actually the automatically went to the wall when they came in. Sara Stinky though if requesting a Sign nurse or interpreter they are refusing I thought that was sorta illegal now with ADA and all. << Hey peoples, ok i am kinda lost on this. Guest guest
Just my opinion... Maybe this situation is saying something about the DOCTOR more than it is the nurse. I mean it's not like it comes out of HER money anyway she shouldn't give a crud. Ever think ole Baskin might not like springing for the terp? If he's ok with it, then why isn't he telling that nurse it's OK!? You know they have probably communicated about the situation. My dr is also at a university, and I've been to three appts there recently with interpreters waiting. One time the terp was late and the nurse apologized to us over and over. Very very nice. I do know of other drs I've had though that would probably not furnish (or not want to) a terp. I think it says a lot about the Dr if the Nurse is denying you the terp (especially when the disease we are seeing him for is what CAUSED our deafness!) Why don't you go over her head and ask to speak to Dr. Baskin and see how HE feels about it? If he's the one who doesn't want the terp, maybe you should switch Dr's!!!! He can't be that great if he's not doing this for you! Bedside manner in a way, ya know? Guest guest
Carla, You didn't meet Dr. Baskin at the Symposium. When I told Ruth that I had people questioning me at why I wanted to use him. she said that these people had not HEARD him! He is a wonderful person with a bedside manner to match. I believe Sandy is trying to save money for the university. When I called the service to ask about my rights, they told me the hardest people for them to collect money from were doctors and lawyers! I have had my share of real a**holes, and Dr. Baskin does not fit into this category. THAT is why I am blaming it on the nurse! There is also another thing, a good bedside manner is PREFERRED, but a skillful surgeon is the ultimate goal. Guest guest
, This is something I REALLY don't understand. Dr. Baskin SEEMS like the type of doctor that would do ANYTHING for his patients. When I was talking to Kim about him before I decided to go to him, she was telling me about him staying late or working weekends to accomadate her. Last time (and ONLY time) that I seen him this nurse called at the last minute to tell him they would not pay for the interpreter. told her to go ahead and order the interpreter and that we would pay for her. Dr. Baskin was VERY patient when I would not understand something or questioned what I did understand. He just does not seem the type to refuse something like this, and I don't believe he would hold it against me that I am standing up for myself, you know? Guest guest
This is a good point. Go to the source instead of the messenger. What I don't understand is that they had provided an interpreter for you before, why aren't they providing one for you now? In the words of Shakespear, " something's rotten in the state of Denmark. " Or Virginia, or whatever state it this hospital is? =) Another thing, the nurse mentions that the doctor is a professor in a University Hospital. Since I'm assuming they're cooperating with ADA by-laws and providing services for their deaf/Deaf student population, they should be springing for the patients/clients also. After all, you guys are paying the doctors, nurses, and interpreter's salary. Mark ----Original Message Follows---- Just my opinion... Guest guest
Well ok, then I'd stop with the worrying and call Baskin, email him, whatever. If he's this good, he'll tell that nurse to shut up and get you a terp. End of story. Can't you reach him? Does he have email access? Go to him, not the nurse. I had a GREAT surgeon with sorry bedside manner and I think they're both pretty important. If I was refused a terp by Baskin's nurse and he's a wonderful man like you say, I'd simply call him because he will fix things in 2 seconds. Would kinda piss the nurse off too, so you'd get to laugh about that too. There are a lot of great NS's around. If you stay with him he certainly has the power to settle this easily if he wants to. I'd do it just out of curiosity to make sure he is Pro-Terp. Or go through the chain of commands, law suit talk, blah blah blah, calling in outsiders. Guest guest
Mark, The state is Texas, and the reason I had an interpreter last time is because WE paid for it! I requested one a full week before my appointment, but the nurse waited until the day of the appointment to call. Something is rotten alright! Guest guest
I got to agree with on this one. If I got tough with my surgeon ( if I had one !! ) and I won against him, I'd be looking for a replacement real fast ! Example ! After winning the TERP battle and bringing this Doc to the attention of the authorities ( for which hes been investigated and put on notice ) you go in for head or spine surgery, and come out with problems !!! What next ? legal action against him because there's doubt about his intentions during surgery ? Will he refuse to operate on you anyhow because of the terp battle ? are you narrowing down your long term options for the sake of a consultation ? This is not a battle against a used car salesman, you've asked him to take your life into his hands ! Its worth fighting for I agree, but not against this guy. Ok Donna you can kick my butt now ! When I was 18 my doc messed up my leg pretty bad. Actually it was for a head AN and he messed up my leg (his mistake). They said before surgery there was like a 3% chance that something could go wrong with my back nerves. I guess by sitting up for the surgery on heavy cushions, it could in some way press upon my Siatic nerve. The nerve that runs from the sping all the way down behind the legs. I could not feel my legs for months, and could not move my left foot for 7 months. I had tons ot therapy and pain (felt like when you arm falls asleep and is just waking up, that electric feeling). I had that feeling for months on end. Turns out I gave him the mentality that he is 'human'. He had told me before surgery that something has the small possiblility of happening and it had. But I wonder how many of the 'small' possibilities that happen to us all ???? My point to you is, even if you demand an interpreter, I wouldn't think that would cause ill will with you and the doc. I would just think he'd view it as you exercising your rights. There is nothing wrong with that. The other point to my story, then in 1994 I needed another surgery with the same doc. My ins. would not cover it (HMO wanted me with a diff. neuro). So, this doc PAID for the surgery himself, his bill and the hospital bill were zero. My sister thought this was a cover up from 1988, but I thought since all the trauma he had caused me from 1988 surgery with my legs, I thought he was doing this as compensation for his human blooper. Do you guys think it was a cover up? Sally R.

Guest guest
Yes, I joined the crew, again. Cinny, there must be a half dozen charges that are incurred in the OR during surgery. Not just your surgeon's. My neruo puts down the time he spent in the OR, then everyone else associated with the surgery, puts down their time and charge. Such as the anesthesiologist, charges for equipment, supplies, etc. The neuro's fee is but one part of it. Then, the hospital bills you too for the time of surgery as well as your room charge and on and on. I don't want to beat this this death but I'm just curious, cause a neuro can't swing that much clout at U of M! BTW, when's the vegas trip?? Hi Greggy! So you really did join the crew!
