I have to disagree. What Terri said is not ridiculous. I am also taking glucophage for insulin resistance (not diabetes) and I won't have to take it forever. I do not have abnormal blood sugar levels, just too much insulin floating around in my body that makes my other hormone levels "off." Once I lose weight, my metabolic profile will be different and I may not need the glucophage anymore. I think it varies if you do not have diabetes (which I don't).

No problem Bea. I just wanted to pass along that sometimes different people take the same drug for different reasons. I didn't want to come across as hostile, so I hope it didn't seem that way.

Good luck with the glucophage (metformin) and helping you conceive. I have PCOS and insulin resistance and I got pregnant while I was taking the glucophage. It really helps keep my cycles more regular. My sister-in-law also took 3+ years to get pregnant the first time and now has 2 kids. I know it can be very stressful. Best wishes!

Glucophage is no longer used strictly for diabetes. It is also used in cases of PCOS.

How long you have to stay on it really depends on what your dx is.

Some non insulin dependant diabetics can go off meds if they have lost weight and/or

changed their lifestyles. Every case is different. :-)

My DH started out on glucophage and is now on glucovance. His weight is under control and

he is in very good physical condition but he will probably be on medication for the remainder of his life.

I hope that while doing this she was learning to eat right as well.

Wellllll, I wouldn't promise anything in that regard -- she thinks all "diets" are "too restrictive!"

I take Metformin (generic form of Glucophage) because I have PCOS. The hope is that with a diet change, I will no longer need the medication. I am taking it primarily to help me to conceive. We've been trying to get pregnant for 3 years now.

This has been really informative today -- thanks to all of you for the info.

Here's my input -- my best friend's doctor put her on Glucophage and some kind

of prescription diet pill to help her lose weight! She does not have diabetes at

all. The doctor told her the mixture of Glucophage and the diet drug were quite

effective in weight loss.

We'll see!

And that right there is the thing. I originally had the blood work done

to test my thyroid because she thought I had hypothyroidism. Which I

don't. I have hyperthyroidism, which means because of my weight, my

thyroid is making to MUCH stuff and I have insulin resistance.

It's quite all right Bea. :) I'm glad that people are looking out for

each other here. My first husband had to go through the same thing with

the glucophage for insulin resistance and he wen't to a different doc as I.

Thanks for your concern.

My doc told me that this is also what they give to people who polycystic

overy syndrome. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you conceive

soon. I've got an 8 month old daughter who's wonderful. :)

I'm not 100% sure about this since our daughter is a type 1 diabetic

but most people I know who are on glucophage are type 2 diabetics

which is brought on by weight gain. I have never heard about this

dealing with hormonelevels but I am also learning lots about this.

Too much insulin or not enough floating around does indicate diabetes

in most people. But as I am not a medical doctor I can't say for

sure.

Thanks for helping me learn something new. From what I have read yes

Type 2 diabetics with proper dieting and exercise can very often

either reduce their meds or stop them altogether.
