Rebekah, how odd life is. I am in the process of buying a house in

Albuquerque through my divorce but do not feel grounded here. I am in a nice

neighborhood not far (3 minutes) from UNM. I spend a lot of time in the law

library there. Kathy

Been to Santa Fe and it is beautiful. lots of artist's shops with south west

themes.

Small intimate restaurants. Though I only spent 2 days there, it was peaceful.

Bob

Good luck and I hope it works out for you !!!!!

That's great Kathy! That fear of the unknown! Well I am going to pull up all of my roots an give it a go. Still gotta figure out what to do with Godzilla...the persian with an attitude. I refuse to give him up....but he might have to stay with friends down there until I figure out a plan

to smuggle him in the dorm or find alternate housing temporarily. Good luck in Albequerque! My friends live in Pecos...not far from Santa Fe... not too far anyway.

My friends sister is an artist in Santa Fe.

I absolutely love her work. Tina La Marque.

She used to be married to Bob Earl....Adult Child speaker on the lecture circuit. I seem to remember some big wars he had with

Clancy I. around AA BS and nazi 12 steppers. Rebekah

Sounds like a geographic.....NOT!!!!! :^)

How exiting! I am thrilled for you. I don't know too much about New

Mexico, but I did visit the Carlsbad Caverns during my cross country

trip last year. They are awesome. One of the rooms in the cave covers a

full 15 acres. It is wonderfully lit and the beautifully excavated

walkways cover about 3.5 miles. If you're into a little spelunking I'd

highly recommend it.

Rebekah,

Way to go! I wish you the best in your new endeavors.

I lived near Denver, Colorado for 14 years - it's due north of Albuquerque. Santa Fe is an interesting artsy town. Weather is similar to Colorado's plains area. Very low humidity (avg. 15%), semi-arid topography (geography?). In the summer we'd average 30 days of 90 degree and above temperature. It was slightly bearable than here in the East because of the extremely low humidity. I didn't spend hardly any time in New Mexico when I lived out west. The advantage to moving from the extreme East or Western U.S. to abouts in the center is the greater opportunity to see half of the country that was harder to get to before.

I moved to Colorado when I was 24 but I was married. I had worked for Gulf Oil and our department was transferred, some to Houston and some to Denver. So I really wasn't alone when I went out there.

14 years later and working for a new company, I asked for a transfer to West Virginia so I'd be closer to my family. I wasn't married anymore so was free to change if I felt like it. Still it was a big deal for me. And scary too. Was I making the right choice. And I didn't know a soul where I was going. I have a feeling your schoolwork will keep you quite busy, too busy to spend much time being scared once you are settled in. Will your education take you to different places out in the West? Does anthropology have something to do with dinosaur bones and such? Colorado has a park called Dinosaur Monument.

Best of luck and enjoy the adventure!

Jan

my big decision

I had a pretty sleepless night. I decided to go out on a limb and move halfway across the country. It feels strange to see that in print.I am 43 years old, and have lived in Oregon my entire life. For about 10 years now I have been dreaming, fantasising, longing to go to the Southwest. I finally made up my mind to stop wishing and do something about it. I sent away for an application to the University of New Mexico. I am an Anthropology major, and it looks like they have a really good program. I'll be tranferring as a senior. I am already starting to feel terrified.I am at a good place in my life, and I feel like I am a fairly strong and couragious person. I have given myself a year to start packing and figuring out all of the details. I have never done anything like this before. I watched my mother live her whole life in fear, and don't want to end up like that. Since my son died, I have been thinking very seriously about life, and taking some risks to do the things I dream about. My best friend just moved to Santa Fe, and she loves it there. So here I sit, both excited and terrified at the same time. I haven't got much stuff, and I figure by next year, I will have less. The only things I plan on keeping are a few boxes of personal momentos, a couple of computers, a stereo, small freezer, and my persian cat Godzilla. Anybody from or have any experience with the Santa Fe or Albequerque area? Rebekah

Hi Rebekah!

How exciting! I am considering moving to Oregon myself. I will be

visiting there this September to check it out as a potential place to

live. I don't know anything about the southwest, but I have a personal

policy that I don't want to live in a place where I need a pot holder

to open the door of my car. But hey, I do hear it's nice though!

I have about one year too before I get the old heave ho from my house

and go somewhere else. Maybe we can count down together.

Kathy,

Funny you should mention travelling away to save a marriage. I did that in

1980. I came to Michigan from ABQ to try to save my first marriage.

Didn't work and I have been here ever since. Almost moved to FLA after the

divorce, but met the SECOND ex and, well, HE ended up in FLA!

I went to AA clubs in ABQ before I quit going to meetings and not too many

people with more than a year clean in those places. I wondered about that.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of support to the clubs, anyway-Maybe they

all got SMART! (ha ha!)

By the way, my second ex was bisexual-but he prefers himself to anyone-if

you get the idea. He also entertained himself with cross-dressing. The

kind of crap we put up with in other people just amazes me sometimes.

Anyway-I lived down off Montgomery (NE) and on Lagrima De Oro (NE) when I

lived there. But if you've lived near the beach...I sure understand that.

I have always loved the water myself-I live in a boating community right

now-with canals out to Lake Erie. Never been to Hawaii-would love to go.

Maybe someday. I also lived in San Diego for a few years and would go up to

Black's Beach (!)and Torrey Pines. I used to do some waterskiing on Mission

Bay, too. My parents had to drag me out of the water when I was a kid.

So I've digressed. One of the things I dearly love to do when I'm in ABQ is

take the tram or drive up to the top of the mountains and just sit on a

ledge and let the wind blow up the side mountain and across my face. There

is such a calming sensation in the experience! The view ain't so bad,

neither! If you get the chance, try it-if you don't mind heights.

, ... Black's! You've given yourself away! I also spent many

years in San Diego, marriage #1, lived in Rancho Santa Fe... quite a switch

to my little house here in Ridgecrest by way of Hawaii. We seem to be

tracing each other's steps in some weird way. Yes, the meetings here were

somewhat less than supportive. The Desert Club and the Heights are the two I

used to be familiar with. But since I've become 12 step free, have not been.
