Cipro doesn't cure everything. When the infectious disease dept.

asked for bile cultures during a PTC, we found out exactly what was growing

in me and what antibiotic we needed to use. Since you're not having

a PTC you can't go that route, but it's obvious that you'll need to talk

with your doctor to change your meds. Please don't just suffer with

this. It's my own opinion, of course, but I used to have chills a

lot until we found the right antibiotic. Now, I don't have them!

all over kind of chills but get so cold nothing I do can get me warm.

I asked my GI Dr. and he gave me Cipro for 10 day, no change. I asked

my Hep and he said that goes with a liver disease. I will have my

first Remicade IV next Thurs. and I don't need an infection to start

out as that med. makes you more prone to infections so they said, anyway

I am going to try it. Please pray for me that I don't have another

reaction, especially anything to add to my itching.

Thanks

Martha

Emilie, No, Plaquenil doesn't effect me that way...but Allegra does. Are

you taking

anything for allergies? I think that Lupus just picks a place to attack, and

the rest

of the body goes defenseless for an unspecified period of time. That seems

to be the

way it works with me, anyway. Hope you feel better soon. Hugs, MM

Emilie,

Hi! I take 400mg Plaquenil/day and have for almost a year.

I don't know exactly how it works. I get colds, runny nose, sore

throats, etc. but I just chalked a lot of it up to the Lupus and

Fibromyalgia. Don't know for sure though.

Donna, When my aunt was being tested for everything under the sun, she had

heart

problems, however, one of her problems was not enough of the " good " kind, too.

Switching to fatty fish (salmon, tuna) instead of low fat meats or poultry,

switching

to olive oil instead of other cooking oils, DID help with that problem.

However, it

can also, according to her internist, indicate liver problems, which means

the body

is having trouble processing things through the liver. Perhaps it would be a

good idea

for your son to get another opinion, this time from a good internist. Hugs,

MM

Donna, I think a second opinion is best right away. Ask for copies of the

tests and

opinions of the doc he already saw, and get an appointment right away (it

usually

takes a while to get one) with a Cardiovascular specialist. That's what I

would do

in his shoes. Love, MM

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info. I know I can always count on you. The doc my son went to was an internal med doc, but I am wondering if he needs to see a cardiologist. What do you think? He is going to be retested in 6 months so we aren't sure if we should just wait on that or do something else.

Hope you are having a good evening. Love, Donna

Hi Dave,

I bought mine at my local pharmacy. If you have any type of insurance they

can help you with that too. You'll need a prescription from your doctor.

yes, 15 minutes before meals is ok since it typically takes 15 minutes for

humalog to start working.

however, I suggest to not take it until the food is sitting in front of you as a

precaution. if you are out in a restaraunt and take it expecting yoru food in 15

mins, and they bring it in 45 to 50 mins, you are in low reaction! so, make

certain the food is in front of you then dose it.

also, you should only dose humalog every 4 hours so keep your meals 4 hours

apart.

You need to determine how much humalog to take per 15 grams of carbs. you also

need to determine how much 1 unit of humalog lowers your blood sugar for

combatting high sugars. Typically 1 unit lowers your blood sugar about 50

points. That is the starting point. so, if you are 200, you would dose 2 units

to drop down to 100 and skip the meal and drink water to make your cells more

receptive to the humalog.

50 is just a starting point, with time, you will determine how much 1 unit

lowers your bgs. for me, it only lowers it 15 points, not 50, but for safety,

docs always have you start by saying 1 unit lowers yoru bgs 50 points then you

bump that down if needed via trial and error.

any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

question

Today I stop taking Startix and go back to lantus and to humalog.

I need to know when you should take humalog before meals.

My doctor says 15 minutes before meals. Is this correct?

thanks Dave johnson

ps any other advice would be appreciated.

Depending on the person's insulin resistance a unit of Humalog varies

accordingly as to how many points will be reduced on the glucose monitor.

This can only be determined by the individual with experimentation.

For instance I have learned that a unit of Humalog will reduce my blood

glucose level by about 7.5 or 8.0 points.

If I have a blood glucose level of 200, it takes around 12 or 13 units of

Humalog to reduce my glucose level to a 100 points reading.

I have also learned that my digestion does not flood my blood stream with

lots of glucose until about an hour or so after I have eaten. Since the

Humalog starts working in a relatively short period of time say ten or

fifteen minutes after injection, I can wait until after a meal to dose with

Humalog, and this gives me plenty of time, even up to a half hour after a

meal, to calculate the number of grams of carb I have consumed and the

number of units of Humalog required to cover this carb consumption. If I

calculate correctly, I rarely have a low glucose reaction.
