Guest guest
Questionable.. that's the issue on oats in the US. Oats themselves are GF, but there is the contamination issue that some worry about in either the fields due to crop rotation or in the mills since not all mills wash thoroghly or are dedicated oats only. We did oats fine, and if i was worried with Loagen I used Irish or ish oats (McCann's) for him. (we are challenging and loading on Gluten right now). For our issues, I wasn't going to stress out overly over crop rotations and used long cooking oats vs quick or instant as Quaker put out a statement a while back that said that the instant are more likely contaminated.. Our GI that we conferred with at the Mayo Clinic while we were in Japan said that in his opinion oats is a purely personal choice and it's a choice I had to really weigh. We didn't have alot of options and chose to do so... but many celiacs don't eat oats. Loagen never seemed to have issues with McCanns nor Capn crunch... but that's not to say he didn't have some unknown gut issues. www.celiac.com has some great articles on oats; just search for "oats" on their search page. jen oats Hello everyone! I keep on reading that oats are tolerated by some celiacs and not by others...does that mean that they are gluten free but some people just can't handle them? I get horrible pains in my stomach if I eat any gluten, even if it's crumbs on my plate. But oatmeal does not bother me. I have been testing out cereals too like Capn Crunch, I could eat the whole box and I wouldn't get a stomach ache. So are oats gluten free or am I just sailing in unchartered territories? I am very confused about the whole oats thing, and I am also the food safety tester in the family because my cousins don't have any symptoms at all, so whatever I say pretty much goes because they can't tell the difference. Any thoughts would help=) Thanks! ~Mandy~
