choking and NO air getting in - anybody know details about this symptom?

hi. name is diane. i have ppms - dx'd 5/1/97 at the tender age of 45. Ugh. over many, many years, and prior to dx, i have "choked" on my own saliva. i always thought it was a "flap" problem and let it go. over the course of 20 years it has gone from occasional saliva choke to full blown, out-of-the-clear-blue choke on "saliva or vocal chords or something other than food" (never food) and I CANNOT GET AIR IN. I CANNOT BREATHE IN. I POUND ON CHEST WITH SOMETHING NEARBY AND EVENTUALLY I WHEEZE AIR IN, A SMALL TINY BIT AT A TIME. this wheeze air routiine is repeated for a few times until i get full use of breathing back. got the picture? and if you're not sure, try holding your breath and then when you want to breathe in, don't. do that for about 2 minutes (seems like 10) and then we'll talk. lol anyway, my neuro says that breathing uses (rough, i think he said?)muscles, and ms only attacks smooth muscle nerve pathways. BUT he said there are a group of smooth muscles VERY NEAR OR HAVING TO DO WITH THE FUFUNTION OF breathing. so, off i went to a gastronolgist (spelling?) to get tested to make SURE it wasn't "food, esophagus or otherwise" related. after a test or two, nope. moving on to the next group of drs and tests now.i was sent to a speech pathologist. she told me of a dx called "vocal chord dysfuntion" and said it was a relatively new dx but a very real illness. i was elated! now, i am in the process of waiting for apts for video something-or-other where they take a pix of the vocal chords and i am scheduled for (another) modified barium test. no biggie.my question(s) is/are: anyone know of this symptom of ms?anyone know anything about this?help!thx.me/rat/diane

Dear Diane:I've been searching and searching for info for you. So far all I've found is this from someones MS blog:

"Around the end of last year and into the beginning of this

year, I began to have choking and coughing spells. My wife figured out I

was choking on saliva. It was worse at night while sleeping, because I

lie on my back. We called our swallowing specialist who helped us before

with my problems swallowing liquids. She said choking on saliva is a

common problem in progressive MS. She advised keeping the lips together,

because when your lips are apart, you can't swallow. If your mouth is open

and saliva pools in the mouth and throat, you can't swallow it and will choke

on it. She also suggested sucking on hard candy and chewing gum. As

for choking spells while sleeping, she advised lying on my side as much as

possible. "

It seems we had a member onlist who had trouble breathing, as well. I cannot reember what that was about, but it seems the woman I'm thinking of did need to unsub. You might consider consulting a gastoenterologist; there are many medications

that can help this, including propping the upper part of your body up with pillows.

I would enquire about the possibility of Gastro-esophogeal Reflux Disease. Been

there, have MS, and have been greatly helped. Love your way, Diane, n

sharon: it used to be like this but now it's worse. now i will choke out of the clear blue for no reason. but what i really posted was for someone to hopefully recognize the symptom and have an answer/name for this. i am seeing a speech pathologist and they seem to say that vocal chord dysfuntion is a real and recent dx that causes many symptoms like mine. ALSO and possibly more important: my neuro stated that (as well as the specialist that he sent me to and his name/specialty escapes me right this second) MS ATTACKS THE NERVE PATHWAYS, ETC, YADDA YADDA, TO MUSCLES THAT ARE SOFT. SOFT BEING THE KEY WORD HERE. Many other muscle tissue is NOT soft. (heart, etc.) AND the muscles used in the upper throat area are soft therefore they could be MS fodder. (food for the little bad guys that eat mylin) So that's what i'm looking for. info on THAT. dianeSharon

My wife figured out I was choking on saliva. It was worse at night while sleeping, because I lie on my back. We called our swallowing specialist who helped us before

with my problems swallowing liquids. She said choking on saliva is a common problem in progressive MS. She advised keeping the lips together, because when your lips are apart, you can't swallow. If your mouth is open and saliva pools in the mouth and throat, you can't swallow it and will choke on it. She also suggested sucking on hard candy and chewing gum. As for choking spells while sleeping, she advised lying on my side as much as possible. I have been really worried about this myself. I am having a "voice" problem. I can't project my voice like I used to, my "voice" hurts, when I try to talk louder my whole head hurts as well as under my jaw and neck (it feels 'mumpy'). I KNOW this isn't normal and I KNOW in my heart this is MS related. I have searched and searched for information on it and couldn't find anything online. I did get a book called "Multiple Sclerosis...The Questions You Have, The Answers You Need, 3rd Edition" by lind C. Kalb, Ph.D. It's a huge book and retails for $39.95 but I got it on ebay for under $10!! There is a chapter called Speech and Voice Disorders and my problem is right there. I finally found something that tells me I'm not insane. It's called Dysarthria. It

says 25 to 40 % of MSers have speech or voice disorders. My throat feels raw from talking and I often can't clear my throat. I tried to address this with my neuro last visit but my appt. was with his nurse practitioner instead. I mentioned it several times and he glossed right over it. But I will see the neuro next visit and he'll listen to me. I told the appt. gal that I didn't want to see the NP and only wanted to see Dr. K. Diane, you have had some voice disorder already (unless you talked in a 'scanned speech' kind of way before you had MS?). But you current problem (the saliva thing) is not part of this and so far I haven't found anything in this book about your problem. But I'm still looking. I'll let you know the second I find anything.hugs)))Sharon Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.. Re: Re: choking and NO air getting in - anybody know details about this symptom? sharon: it used to be like this but now it's worse. now i will choke out of the clear blue for no reason. but what i really posted was for someone to hopefully recognize the symptom and have an answer/name for this. i am seeing a speech pathologist and they seem to say that vocal chord dysfuntion is a real and recent dx that causes many symptoms like mine. (heart, etc.) AND the muscles used in the upper throat area are soft therefore they could be MS fodder. mylin) So that's what i'm looking for. info on THAT. dianeSharon <wobbletowalk@ yahoo.com> wrote: Dear Diane:I've been searching and searching for info for you. Dear Sharon and all who are having these problems:

Sorry as I am to hear of these problems that you are having, I suspect that it ex

plains why I am no longer a first alto, but am heading toward the lower range of

baritone! Really annoying on the phone--of course all who know me are used to

it, but if a stranger calls, they just assume that I am male; I am so tired of being

addressed as "Sir" or "Mr.!" (and they cannot even SEE my short hair, which is

thin and puny from corticosteroids)! Cheers, n, with hopes for improvement!
