I sent the following to on 6/5/01 and did not hear how she made out. If

this is the same treatment that you had, or anyone else, tell me about it.

I had an RF block 3 weeks ago just prior to having repeat surgery on my left

foot. This procedure consisted of implanting 4 catheters along the left side of

my lumbar vertebrae, then inserting an RF electrode into the clusters of

sympathetic nerves in each area to cauterize the nerve endings. The purpose of

this was to increase blood flow to my left foot to minimize the risk of a

flare-up or possible spreading of the RSD.

The whole process took about 1 hour and, due to heavy sedation, was less painful

than the previous blocks I have had. I also had almost 20% immediate relief of

the burning pain in my left foot and moderately in my right foot.

When the surgery heals, I will repeat the process in my right side and have my

right foot re-operated on.

Like you, I was not familiar with RF before, and was very nervous about having

it done. There are some risks if it is not done properly, however, I have an

excellent pain doctor and will have it done again. The nerves are expected to

grow back in about six months and it is possible that the pain will return.
