FYI - this is the best recap of a few dozen messages on NANOG re the rockin'

and shakin'. NANOG is the North American Network Operators Group - who are

the people who maintain, troubleshoot, and monitor the internet's

infrastructure throughout the country (and sometimes the world, though

that's beyond NANOG per se). This is one of the best places to get a real

picture of how much communications damage has been sustained - and that

often gives a pretty good idea of how the rest of the infrastructure is

working.

The bottom line here is that there will be a significant amount of

inconvenience in that area for a few days - and some condemnable structures,

it looks like - though little in the way of injuries. I'll be glad to hear

from anyone in that area .. and worrying a little bit about some long-lost

cousins there.

Blessings..

Re: Seattle Earthquake

The US Geological Survey has revised the magnitude to 7.0.

Due to structural damage in the air traffic control tower the SeaTac

airport has been closed down. All railroad traffic at standstill

until tracks have been inspected.

Cell phones in the area are very congested, and people report difficulty

making phone calls in and out of the area. I have not heard if any phone

companies have imposed network management controls on voice traffic.

Folks have reported in from the Westin Building, the main Internet hub

in the seattle area, that no substantional damage to the building.

Approximately 11,000 electrical customers are without power.

Wow! I was under my desk on that one! It was a really roller. It also

turned off my power for about four hours, so now I am behind in my work.

Seattle...

I just went in and turned the telly back on and they have upgraded it to a

7.0

Yipes.. :) Hang on Lucy! :)

Hi:

As someone who is sitting here on the other end of the continent from

Seattle, I have to say that I think the fact that there were no deaths other

than that woman who had a heart attack, goes a long way towards telling me

that the situation could have been alot worse. Don't take this the wrong

way, but I tend to think that when the news media over-sensationalizes

things, the true telling factor is the number of injuries and deaths. I'm

very thankful that there wasn't a " body count " .

While it was pretty huge, and it nearly scared the

cookies outta me, the media is making it out to be far

worse than it was. When I think of San Fran,

Northridge, Kobe...now THOSE guys had serious trouble!

We were lucky for two reasons: 1) It was so deep in

the ground, and 2) we are so well-prepared with our

building codes for the most part.

My cousin works for a law firm on the 70th floor of

the tallest bldg in Seattle. She said they went up and

down, back and forth, and that it was scary, but

that's about it. Phew!

I just look at the news, and think that if I were

elsewhere in the country and had loved ones up here,

I'd be freaking. It's just not that horrible. THANK

GOD (and whatever other forces!)!

Of course, the similar size quake happened in El Salvador where hundreds

were killed. The lesson to be learned is building codes and land fill. The

buildings in ES fell trapping, killing and injuring people. They were built

on land fill and certainly not with any codes in mind. In California

buildings are built so strictly coded it is unlikely they'll fall unless

they are built on land fill, which is what all those crashed buildings were

about in the San Francisco quake. I understand the buildings in Seattle

that had the most damage are built on land fill.

In an area where buildings are not reinforced and built on land fill, they

could be next. They can and do happen everywhere.
