He can't have cream or butter, but gets limited mayo and avocado. He eats quite a bit of seafood. I feel like we have become gourmet cooks! But by doing this, his cholesterol went from 840 to 220, and his triglycerides went from 4800 to 120. We had to fight to keep him on the diet. We have felt very alone on this form of the diet. Please, if anyone else is dealing with this, can we hear from you?

I can't relate to those numbers as I'm sure Mitch's weren't that high but I must admit I don't remember what they were. We simply quit giving him butter, decreased the cream, and increased the olive oil. He hates fish or fish oil but I sneak it in every once in a while. It's supposed to be great for the brain (EFAs or omega 3s) anyway. His cholesterol immediately went way down after the switch to olive oil but it was 299 last time we checked so still high.

and : my daughter Brittany started the diet 1/29/01 and right away her cholesterol shot up to about 500. THey have watched her closely but the neurologist and dietician were comfortable that the numbers would come down and they have decreased each time we have have blood drawn. They did tell me though that it takes approx. 18 months for triglycerides and cholesterol to stabilize after starting the diet. Good for you for pushing to keep your son on the diet~~!!

Daisy's cholestrol has been very good since we've introduced avocado into her meals at least once a day. Also, you probably know, but prawns are just heaped with cholestrol, so try to avoid them if you don't already.

Wishing you lots of luck in finding the answers you're looking for.

Hello!

Hi! We are and , parents of who is 9 years old and has been on the ketogenic diet since May 18, 2000. It was a long journey for us to get to the diet, but now that we are here, we are soo...glad. I would be interested in hearing how many of your kids have had elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. We almost had to take off the diet after 3 months because his numbers went so high. Because of this, his diet sounds different from what I have read so far from the group. He gets MCT oil and walnut oil and fish oil with every meal. He can't have cream or butter, but gets limited mayo and avocado. He eats quite a bit of seafood. I feel like we have become gourmet cooks! We had this problem three months into the diet. I don't have a

dietician, so I've learned things the hard way. I switched his fats to

mainly unsaturated fats & I've tried to stay away from processed foods

(he still gets some, but mostly fresh fruits, veggies, and meats).

's cholesterol when from 444 to under 200 after the first month of

changes (doc couldn't believe it). I also added flaxseed oil which is

suppose to help with lowering cholesterol. But, I tell you, it really

scared us when we got that 444 reading, we were scared too that we would

have to go off the diet (what a scary decision - between heart disease or

epilepsy). Thank goodness that this diet can be modified to handle these

things.

Hi, Janet -- Glad to have you join us! :o)

You and I share a couple of similarities! I fitness walk, too, using

Sansone's " Walk Away the Pounds " DVDs (I highly doubt I walk

anywhere near as much as you! LOL)... And, my biggest problem is

also the sweets (chocolate, pop, cake, cookies, etc).

Intuitive Eating is nice because, I can still HAVE the sweets, but I

need to keep them within the boundaries of " hunger "

and " fullness " ... otherwise I go on an all-out binge. :-?

PS... Congrats on releasing 25 lbs and keeping it off!

Welcome Janet!

I also love to fitness walk. I have a friend that I walk with when our schedules allow. I also have a few of 's WATP DVDs and enjoy doing those. I wear a pedometer every day and keep track of my steps so I know how active I have been.

Glad to see some other walkers here! :-)
