That is a really great reminder Vicki! Thanks! I needed that today.

I went back to counting calories 3 weeks ago and it lasted for 2 weeks. Guess what? I GAINED 5 pounds counting claories!!! Now I'm having to go through the permission stage again of allowing myself to have the foods I was restricting. I am determined that this time I've learned my lesson.

You know what I need to do? I need to put my calorie counting software in the garbage. I uninstalled it from my computer but it needs to be gotten rid of so that it's not tempting me anymore. I'm going to do that right now!

I would like to encourage all the new comers to IE by saying that this is a life journey. As with any journey, you will discover mysteries, trials and victories. Everyday is a new day. That is what makes this such a wonderful experience. You can’t ‘blow’ it like you can when you are on a diet. If you ate too much you just wait until you are hungry again. I read an article where this guy explains it as a very forgiving diet. You most likely will not lose a lot of weight in a small amount of time. This is a reversal of the overeating lifestyle. Overeating took you months and years to put on the weight, IE will take months and years to get rid of the excess weight. You will be happier, more content and healthier than any other time in your life. Don’t be tempted to diet…it will backfire. Just keep on living. That is what IE is all about…living.

I am glad you are all here.

Tell me about it….LOL.

Sometimes I am so tempted to look at the back of the box for the calorie

count. When I check to see what the ingredients are in the food I have to

be careful not to peak at the calories. If I do peak, it messes with my

mind.

I seen a blip on TV about

Richey ( I think that is her name). It showed how thin she was now in her

bikini. I know that she is unhealthy but a part of me wanted to be thin

like that. I just refocus my mind on being happy and healthy.

I have to say that it is really tempting at times to fall off the wagon. I have been struggling with that because the progress with IE is slow. And yes, I do know that my weight didn't get here over night so it's not going to go overnight but it's tempting to think that going back to counting calories or some other "diet" is going to be a quicker fix. But usually, like others have said, it backfires and I end up worse off than I was. I am trying to keep in mind, that eating this way at least is maintaining my weight, and I get to eat what I want, and if I could get the last little hurrdle of excessive snacking under control, I think I will be well on my way. I am a snacker by nature, and I have noticed that it's harder to notice the fullness/hunger scale when I am snacking throughout the day. I am trying to break the snacking habit, but it's hard. Has anyone else struggled with snacking? And if so, do you have any

suggestions for overcoming the snacking urge. Thanks, Rhonda Duell wrote: That is a really great reminder Vicki! Thanks! I needed that today. Lately, instead of eating when I want to

snack, I drink a glass of ice water and crunch on the ice. Then I go and find

ahhh, snacking. If I really obey what I feel in my Spirit, I cannot

snack at all anymore. Just eat when I'm hungry. I would imagine, if

you were all the way to hunger every time you snacked, it would be

o.k. to snack, but most of the time we are snacking and there is no

real hunger. Anyhow, I do much better when I stick to a meal or

sometimes, I have my dessert later apart from my meal, even though I

could have had it at the meal. Anyhow, the best thing spiritually to

do is to cry out to God for help ( hebrews 4:16) and then do whatever

He tells you to stay out of temptation. Having fellowship helps too

with other likeminded people that are trying to obey the

hunger/fullness signals, and this is something I've not had. Focus off

of food--- put all your energies into something else. Also, don't sit

in the kitchen or near the pantry.

There was an article posted to the DietSurvivors list, not too long ago, that talked of how Ritchie and several other "famous names" are struggling with eating disorders. And, yet, this super-thin image is what's being portrayed as "ideal"... If only they'd tell us the truth, then we'd think about it and see that the media is basically making us say, "I want to be eating-disorder thin!" :-(

So sad.

PS.. I think it said she weighs something like only 95 pounds! Oiy!

Me! Me! Me! I'm a snacker, too. And, I can't seem to get over that hurdle. I'm still doing it daily, even though I know that, if I would just stop snacking, the weight would drop off because I'm eating mostly according to hunger-fullness at other times of the day. The snacking is what keeps me where I am. :-?

I offer you suggestions, but keep in mind that I'm not following my own advice... LOL. I *could*, but I'm still trying to bring myself to the point of being *that* fed up with myself again:

-- chew gum .. can't eat when you're chewing gum, and it gives you mouth something to do.

-- drink water ... it gets you over that "need-to-snack" hump

-- go for a walk, a bike-ride, etc.... do whatever it takes to keep yourself busy so you're not able to snack

-- write to the group about why you think you want to snack at that time

Hi!This group was so quiet- then a wonderful burst of energy... love it! Welcome to all the new folks...

I'm a snacker too!!! And I feel just like Jenn... if I could quit snacking... the wait would drop... b/c I think my meals are pretty good... I rarely eat past satiety... and if I do it's not by much...

you have to face what you are trying to avoid by just going to eat... start trying to practice acnowledging what was going on in your head just before you get the urge to eat... then think about it and do whatever it is.. head on.. even if only for 15 min like www.flylady.net Since I started legalizing food my snacking has really gone crazy... I've allowed myself to buy my cheese again --- I love sharp cheddar. And every time the urge hits me I go to the fridge and get a wedge of cheese...

allow yourself to eat chedder for your meals... the craving for it will even off... I used to make chips into nachos with shredded chedder using a cookie sheet. Down to a science. Foil... spray stick.... thin layer of chips... thick layers of cheddar.. broil. gooey goodness. a meal.. before dinner. now... different tactic if I do it.. I use the toaster oven pan... with a smaller scrap piece of foil... :) not much room for more cheese or chips...

and I talk.. I knew I would be too full after 2 hot dogs... at least I did not serve myself my own bowl of potato salad (basically delux stuffed baked potato cold) and had 2 garden tomatoes and a bite of dh's potatosalad. and I'd probably benefit if I just gave myself 10 mins to sit and close my eyes and relax and re-inforce the positive self-talk...

read this ^ about 100 times and let it sink in... you will begin to make it a habit, bit by bit. Hmmm... I hadn't realized this before until I started writing it. I'm tired of saying if would do this, that, etc... I need to DO this, that, etc...

, when I want to snack, but know I am not really hungry, walking for a few minutes helps a lot. This often happens at work in mid-afternoon. Sometimes I walk around the building/parking lot. Sometimes I go talk to someone with a piece of info instead of sendin an email--and tell them I just needed to get up and MOVE. Usually gets a smile. and I tell myself that when I am hungry, I will eat something I really enjoy. Often the snacks available at work are not really things I like all that well anyway. This is working for me. I think Vicki wrote something today about being out of touch with our bodies and IE is about getting in touch with our bodies. I keep noticing that I must have been using food to not feel.... I want to eat when I am bored, frustrated, antsy, lonely. And of course food does not really fix any of those! It's interesting, Jenn - in reading your post, I was reminded of the

difference between technical changes and adaptive changes, and how

Moran puts emphasis on that. A lot of these suggestions seem

like technical changes that I used to make when I was dieting, and

they never worked in the long run.

I am trying to ask myself " why do I want to snack? Why do I want to

eat beyond fullness? What am I not giving myself that I think food

will do instead? " I've been struggling lately...maintaining my

weight, but eating beyond fullness and even bingeing on a regular

basis. The past 2 days has been especially tough. So I decided to

let myself just eat when I felt like it, and I'm pretty much at the

point where it feels gross and I would _prefer_ not to do that

again. Maybe I just needed to get it out of my system. I find that

the more I tell myself that I can't do something, the more I want to,

so that just doesn't work for me. I need to learn how to make this

work without forbidding either foods OR behaviors. I need to find a

way to reframe the urges so it doesn't feel like denial.

Sorry I don't have answers, just thoughts running around.
