Guest guest
Hello to both new members who are struggling with some weight gain. As a recent (within the past 3 months) reader of Intuitive Eating I hesitate to offer advice, except I think I have something that might help here. I will share my experience and perhaps some of it will resonate. After I read the IE book, I felt this great sense of freedom and delight at having no restrictions. The biggest challenge for me has been to figure out when I’m really hungry and when I’m eating out of boredom (to fill time). One of the things that really jumped out at me in the IE book, is that we have to throw away the scale. We have to give up this quest to loose weight. We have to learn how to be with ourselves as we are - right this minute. I’m pretty sure I remember that in the IE book it says that if you start intuitive eating with a diet mentality, you will gain weight. For me the challenge is to accept and love myself right now and NOT think about what I look like or how much I weigh. The webbook Undieting (www.undieting.com)was extremely helpful to me – frankly more helpful than the IE book. In undieting the key is accepting yourself and let go of any past notions about weight and looks – and then the idea is that when we let go of those images of what we are supposed to be and embrace who we were made to be , the whole food/weight thing falls into place. I think that means not worrying about what is happening and trying to be in the moment. Which is all really hard to do! All of that being said, I have a very hard time when clothes feel tight or I feel fat. I think that we struggle with this because there are so many messages out there that tell us how we have to look. Really, the Undieting webbook is amazing on this ( and I promise its not my book J). Hang in there!! Helen Young From: micheesh Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2006 4:02 PM To: IntuitiveEating_Support Subject: Weight Gain Hi, I am a new member. I have read " Intuitive Eating " and have been putting its principles into practice and am starting to feel much better about my eating. However, I'm a little discouraged because I've gained about 5 pounds, even though I'm trying very hard not to eat past fullness. Has anyone else had this experience - how long until the weight started to come off? Thanks!!
Guest guest
I just started the program a few days ago and I've been gaining too. I'm trying not to worry about it, in my case it might just be carbohydrate bloat. I'm trying to think past this initial week to a point where I won't be craving carbs all the time! I think once I start having more balanced meals and really recognizing when I feel full, the weight will start to come off. Before I hopped on the computer I was checking out the fridge. I realized I was bored and not truly hungry, so I walked away and found something else to do.
Guest guest
Congrats on avoiding some boredome eating! ) And, I think you're absolutely right... From the sounds of it, you just need time to adjust to this new " freedom " with food, to make peace with it, and then the weight will come off. Slow & steady wins the race! ) Jenn <>< -----Original Message----- >I just started the program a few days ago and I've been gaining too. >I'm trying not to worry about it, in my case it might just be >carbohydrate bloat. Guest guest
The first book I read on IE was, Overcoming Overeating and it also deals with the emotional issues and the first thing the authors say is to learn to love yourself at your current size. So I agree whole heartedly with you, Helen. Vicki P. Guest guest
Thanks Helen. I have put the scale in the attic! No more daily weigh ins. I also went out and bought some new clothes that make me feel comfortable and confident. I'm not thinking of success in terms of weight loss, but the initial gain does cause a bit of anxiety to a former chronic dieter!
Guest guest
Helen, I checked out the undieting website. How is it different from the IE book? What made it more helpful for you? Just curious to find out more before I spend $19.95! Thanks, [intuitiveEating_ Support] Weight Gain Hi,I am a new member. Guest guest
Hi – It has more info about the cultural ideas of what women “should” like and how that has changed over the time. It uses the same info in the early chapters as IE (that study done on men that deprived them of food). Something about the way it is written worked better for me. When I read it, I was seriously considering going on another diet (that’s how funky I was feeling) and the Undieting book helped to reinforce the IE principles and explained to me in more detail where all of the “diet craziness” comes from in our culture. It talks about body image a lot too – which I really struggle with. One last thing – reading it felt like a pep talk – which I really needed! Guest guest
Hi, I joined the group last week after I found I had a 10 pound weight gain. Well, I don't feel so bad anymore because I found out one of the allergy medicines I was using was causing the increased appepite, fatigue and therefore the weight gain. I through away the medicine and already today I feel more like myself. I guess it is important to look at things like that. I was honoring my hunger but it was not a real hunger but caused by medication I won't use again. I am more upbeat today. Thanks for your feedback, Lourdes __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Lourdez, welcome. I'd love to know what allergy med you were on that caused the increased appetite. I'm on allergy meds too and have had to take more than usual lately because of fall allergies. I've also had an increased appetite.....in fact....I've noticed that I start feeling crummy from the allergies and if I eat something I feel better.....weird. Anyway, I'd love to know what you were on. Leisa Re: Weight Gain > Hi, > > I joined the group last week after I found I had a 10 > pound weight gain.
