Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 THANKS!! This is exactly the kind of stuff I need to hear! Not just that you were successful but the extra personal info that I identify with. Jenn, putting the other half of the food on the counter is a very smart move and one I hope to remember to do the next time I'm served a portion that I know is too big. If I just cut it and push it to the side of my plate, I usually end up nibbling it away as we sit there and talk after the meal. Getting it away is a much better idea and also, it lets the hostess know that I don't want that much food served to me for the next time = )) And Kate, I'm proud of you for being mindful of your emotions and walking away. I need to do that too, often... maybe I'll think of you the next time I'm tempted to eat to make my head feel better instead of my stomach! thanks so much, Vicky Quote
Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 hahahahaaha I was meaning the emotions in my head vs. the emptiness of my stomach but sometimes I do eat when I have a headache too. Usually I drink 2 big glasses of water first to see if I'm dehydrated and then will take advil if that doesn't help it. = )) Quote
Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 WOW!! All those little successes in a single day really add up! You have inspired me = ) I was trying to explain IE to the Bible study girls last night. We did talk about the fact that whatever "diet or plan" you follow, it requires self-discipline. It just seems like with IE, the transition between weight release and weight maintenance is so much easier and you have a better shot at keeping the weight off for the rest of your life. Everyone has a down day with their workouts occasionally... keep up the good work! Quote
Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Congrats on putting the pizza away for later, Vicky! Here's my tidbit! (almost the same, actually!) On Monday night I had a "sisters night" with my sister, Laurel, at her place. She cooked us Panzerottis for dinner. Yum! Well, when she served me mine, it was HUGE! Without much thought, I cut it in half, and set the other piece on the counter, then went on to just eat the first half. And I took the second half home with me to have for lunch the next day! I was so excited to have those leftovers for lunch the next day 'cause the Panzerotti had been soooo good! It was nice to enjoy it TWICE! ;o) In the past, I'd have looked at it, thought "Man, that's HUGE!", but then eaten all of it anyway to "please the hostess".... Now I know better. Now I know that, if I were to eat the whole thing, I'd feel HORRIBLE afterward, and wouldn't have as good of a time as I do when I eat just half, and then only eat to a 5 or whatever... I did end up eating to a "7" on the hunger scale (slightly over satisfied), but I still felt okay. No bloating or real discomfort. ) Jenn <>< A request, please??? I was thinking last night as I had a minor success, that I would LOVE to hear about the different little (or big!) successes that all the members have throughout the day. And to share mine with ya'll. It would be very helpful and encouraging to see and hear what those successes look like, what the circumstances were, how did you make the right choice at that moment. Anyone willing to share?I'll go first...the girls in our Bible study group got together for pizza and catching up last night. The hostess offered the leftover pizza to those that wanted some. I brought home 3 small slices of veggie pizza. I LOVE pizza...I had 2 slices there and was satisfied. But as I pulled into the driveway, I thought "ooooh, I could have another slice of pizza!" But then the IE voice said, "no, you're not hungry, save it for tomorrow when you ARE hungry, it'll taste better" So I put it in the fridge and went to bed feeling happy and proud of myself = )Vicky in TX http://mizbooksreads.blogspot.com http://intuitive-eating.blogspot.com http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/IntuitiveEating_Support * NEVER DIET AGAIN! * Quote
Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Hi VIcky- This is a great topic and one we don't address enough. We tend to focus on the failures more than the successes and recenlty I realized that my successes outweigh the failures all the time! I just got back from a week-long visit to my family. As in the past I always have the pre-trip jitters and worry about how I will eat. As the trip came to an end I was so pleased that I only had one binge. I did overeat occasionally and I did eat when I wasn't hungry some of the time....my one binge(defined as eating without being aware and eating fast) was very small and I recovered quickly! I felt so good! The same thing happened last month when I visited my family. This time I was more successful at eating only when hungry and never ate over 5. I had one bad episode and as I was focusing on this failure I then realized how many times I had eaten when hungry and stopped when satisfied. THis was a huge accomplishment for me! Usually trips home are riddled with guilt, counting calories, getting mad that I had overeaten, binging, etc.! I think we try too hard to do this IE perfectly when it is a learning process and really there are no " rules " to be broken....just guidelines to follow....this has been hard for me to learn since I am a major black & white thinker. This morning my success was walking out of the kitchen when I realized I was trying to feed an emotional hunger. I had finished my breakfast but wanted more and more and more. I left because I knew it was from the stress of balancing the checkbook! ha! Walking away is a big step! Kate ps. great job on not eating anymore pizza!!!!! Quote

I have learned that headaches are tolerable and I don't need to run eat something or take a pill. For me they will come and go. This is just me....and in the past I was using the first sign of a headache to justify eating something! Just like I have used the first sign of hunger as a ticket to eat. I am learning that hunger pains(the beginning ones) are tolerable! Kate ps....I am not saying I walk around with a headache but if I have one I will take something and only eat a piece of bread if my stomach is empty. Before I would eat too much justifying it because I needed to take a Tylenol. Or sometimes just lying down for a short time will make my headache go away..... Quote
Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Great idea! I love hearing everyone's successes! Here is mine: last night I went home to spend the night with my parents-- just to say hi and visit. My mom cooked an extremely yummy dinner, and you know it always tastes way better anyway when someone else makes it! I was extremely hungry, but I decided to serve myself very small, because I could always have more later. So I had 1/2 piece of garlic bread, some green beans, and a small portion of the macaroni and hamburger. When I was done, I felt great! Before, I would have eaten to extreme fullness because it was a special meal and who knows when I'd get home-cooked food again. Guest guest Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 Great idea, Vicky! I had a few moments yesterday. I had a dentist appt. yesterday morning so I was home after my fiance had already left for work. I ate my breakfast and was satisfied. Then I thought, mmm, there is ice cream in the freezer, and I'm home alone so I can even eat it out of the carton and no one will know! I even went so far as opening the freezer and taking the carton out. Then I thought, wait, I'm already satisfied! I don't even actually want this ice cream right now! If I want some tonight after dinner, I can have some then. So I put it away and felt good about it. For lunch, I had soup and I ate to the slightly uncomfortable point. Upon reflecting after the fact I realized that I was reading stuff online while eating instead of just focusing on my food. For me right now, training myself to just eat without other activity is very important, so I will be mindful of that in the future. I successfully " just ate " dinner and breakfast so that was something. Finally, dinner last night. I had a rough time at the gym before that...ended up in tears because the progress is slow, plus trying to explain why I'm doing IE instead of counting calories to my trainer is a losing battle (I'll just have to let the results speak for themselves). We picked up Chipotle for dinner and I saved half the burrito for tonight, and only had a few chips! The last time we got Chipotle I felt sick for hours because I ate the whole thing. It feels great to have leftovers for another night so I can enjoy it again, and it was nice to not feel sick! Writing all this out is reminding me that I am doing much better than I was before. My copy of the Overfed Head (by the thintuition guy) arrived in the mail along with some hunger/fullness scales in different formats (one is a wheel, one is wallet sized, the book itself comes with a bookmark). I started reading it but didn't make it through too far. I really like Rob's approach (I signed up for 1 month on his website before and it was helpful to get me going)...he's realistic, he doesn't tell me that I don't need to lose weight, and everything he says just makes so much sense to me. Guest guest Posted July 14, 2006 Report Posted July 14, 2006 I love this thread... today I had some leftover chinese food... well it started last night too because I knew we had overordered and I managed to tell myself that I did not need to try and eat it all or sample it all that night because it would be just as good. And it was good today too... and I just put a little on my plate to warm up. LJ Quote
Guest guest Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 YAY for Becky!! That's great hearing about cutting back here and there...good job! This is what it's all about! We have something in common... I, too, "need" to have a little something sweet after a meal...it's like closure. Now what I would like is the whole dessert or good-sized bowl of ice cream. But what satisfies me is just about 1/3rd of a cup of whatever. I know this about myself and now it's just a matter of limiting myself to that much. And it really does help! In fact, I saw a supporting study that said for some people, the sweet at the end of the meal signals the brain that the meal is over and it turns off the appetite signals. If I don't have at least one or two bites of sweet, I still feel vaguely hungry. The other thing I wanted to tell you is that having semi-sweet chocolate chips is a GREAT choice as it's dark chocolate and has antioxidants for you! We limit ourselves to a serving (30 chips)... this is our little sweet at the end of the meal and it's good for us too...way cool beans = )) thanks for sharing, Vicky Quote

Guest guest Posted July 15, 2006 Report Posted July 15, 2006 This is a great topic! I love hearing how everyone else is doing too. My " successes " this week are kind of odd, but still successes to me...I'm the type who can plow through a whole bag of potato chips while sitting at my computer at night. After I'm through with the chips, I usually then eat one or two chocolate bars or a couple of Pop Tarts, or whatever sweet things are in the house. Recently I've decided that I need to start paying more attention to my eating for HEALTH reasons, not just for weight loss. One of my first decisions was to try to reduce the amount of potato chips and sugar that I eat. My success is that I haven't bought any potato chips this week. (I usually go through at least a couple, if not a few.) Instead, so it wouldn't feel like a " diet " , I bought a bag of baked Doritos and ate some the last few nights. I think I made the bag last three nights, which is progress for me. Also, I haven't had a Pop Tart or chocolate bar this week. I'm not forbidding myself to eat them; I'm just trying to reduce the amount of emotional or mindless consumption to try to improve my health. One night I did have a handful of semi-sweet chocolate chips, but I didn't overeat them, as I do with regular chocolate bars. I've been paying more attention to my hunger and fullness this week too, trying to serve myself a bit less at meals. A few times I've gotten up from supper and then made myself a small plate of Triscuits with butter, which I didn't physically need, but it satisfied me, almost like a dessert. Becky Quote
