Guest guest Posted June 13, 2000 Report Share Posted June 13, 2000 Actually, in RI, while you are eligible by diagnosis for EI, for special ed the regs are more like what Celeste mentioned last week. The hearing loss must be significant enough to adversly affect a student's educational performance.(this from the RI special ed regs). Of course I know this from my own long saga with the special ed department and their handling of kids with mild-moderate losses who test well. Anyone who wants sample letters or any advice on dealing with this kind of situation is welcome to contact me. Eligible by diagnosis of an " educationally significant hearing loss " . But there doesn't seem to be a clear definition of what's educationally significant. Ugh. The Brick Alley pub on Thames street has an awesome shirt that on the back spells out Brick Alley in sign. Eastside 's is good, the Newport Beach Club for dinner. Maybe next time folks are going to be around we can get Kerri and get together nearby. Some towns are so forthcoming, it's almost ridiculous. Others (such as, er, Providence) it's like pulling teeth to get a piece of paper from them, never mind assistive technology. I got a call back from our school today...not only is his FM system being ordered this week, the community outreach gal got in her car and drove across town to look at the ROOM that my son would be in at this preschool, to check on the acoustics. If neither of the two places we have lined up works out, they've already offered to move their own town preschool classroom to another spot that has terrific acoustics...The cynic in me is waiting for the other shoe to drop...but...this is all sounding kinda too good to be true! We've only had the personal one for about 2 months now but its been great. We go up to my grandmas in MASS all the time and the FM comes in quite handy!! We plan on settling here in this area because of the services receives(and I love it here) but if you ever hear anything about Newports education system fill me in, lol! I've heard of Christy's and I've stayed in the B and B owned by the guy who runs the Black Pearl. What a neat coincedence. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Newport and Block (1661 Inn) and went back several times. It's a bit rich for an extended family trip these days, for what the inns have to offer, but it's a great day trip. Friends own land on the south side near the cliffs, and we get a free weekend trip every now and then. I live right over the water from Newport (west) on the mainland. Takes about 10 minutes to get there. We've got all that stuff here, but it costs about half as much to live here as there, and we have LOTS more parking, and MANY fewer tourists!!! :-) Anyone wanna come visit?
