Guest guest Posted December 30, 2001 Report Share Posted December 30, 2001 Dear Thyca buds, I have a question. Just a year ago (1/15/01) I had a tt with positive nodes removed. I had my RAI in May (150mCi) and after a few months my sense of taste came back and all seemed okay. Now, over the past few months I'm noticing that my salivary glands hardly work at all. I can't eat carbs as my glands are stimulated to produce saliva so I can swallow and more often than not, the sides of my face near my ears swell when I do eat. (Don't worry, I am not starving). I had a CT scan and the gland ducts are not blocked by stones and these same glands seem tender to touch all of the time. Is this anything anyone of you has experienced or knowledge of? As always, I'd appreciate any advice you might have or knowledge you might share. Thanks and a happy, healthy new year to us all! Guest guest Posted December 30, 2001 Report Share Posted December 30, 2001 I had a small problem with my salivary glands causing pain upon chewing. This happened a few months after my RAI, and it lasted a few weeks and then disappeared. It was kind of a sharp pain, and was sometimes accompanied by a sour taste in my mouth. The flow of saliva seemed normal, just had this pain when I chewed. It was temporary, and I have not had a problem since. I ended up going to an ENT Doctor who " re-opened " the duct by inserting smaller to larger needles after freezing my cheek. I was also encouraged to " milk " the duct (by rubbing forward and down over the cheek) to stimulate saliva. He said the RAI can cause the duct(s) to narrow. Hope this helps. Salivary glands were OK right after RAi but then several months later started to hurt especially when I would eat. 9 months after RAI there was still a lot of pain in my salivary glands and my ENT said there were no stones or blockage. Whenever I start to eat (the first few bites) they hurt like crazy as they start to produce the saliva I guess but then they settle down a bit and I can eat OK. But they do hurt almost all the time. But now a year after my original surgery I had to have radical neck dissections because there was more thyca throughout my neck and nodes. Ever since that second surgery my ears and neck and chin and shoulders and chest are numb so I can't feel the pain in my salicary glands. So I guess something good came out of this second surgery anyway! Someone mentioned to me at the thyca conference in September about a procedure called a saliagram (I think that was the name) that sort of stretches the ducts or something and sometimes helps when the salivary glands are painful. I am 8 months post 154 mCi RAI. 1 1/2 weeks ago I started having pain and swelling in my cheek back to my ear. It seems to tighted up and cause pain when I eat. After eating for a good part of the day, it drains and tasted kind of salty. Sometimes it drains after I massage it. I was just talking to my internist and we kind of agreed this probably had nothing to do with RAI because it had been 8 months with no problems.
