So I had to head to the dermatologist yesterday - who was, of course, late in seeing me. But dh and I were left alone with my medical records, so we went through all the notes about my ep - metho, rupture, surgery, but I found something interesting after the surgical notes. I was looking through the labs and nurses notes and apparently I was *REALLY* sick - trouble breathing, infection, disturbing blood work. At this point, I was thinking " Oh my god - I never knew about all these complications! How could they not tell me! " Then I got to the part about the catheter, where is was noted that I was taught about home-care for it. Now, my catheter was removed the morning after surgery and I didn't go home with it. Then I read on and found that the catheter was in my penis. LOL! They had inserted some unfortunate gentlemen's record in my folder! I'm sure the staff was wondering what the hell dh and I were doing in there by the sound of the laughter. Sometimes fate sends something totally lighthearted to tell you that life is still O.K. It took the nurse nearly 10 minutes to bring my catheter in for a landing. The whole time I was unconvinced that it would even " fit " up there. About the time she was getting started, Don got there from giving them my info. She told him to wait outside and I said " NO. He is coming in here " Well, she got flustered. She was messing with the thing and I said " It is curling up between my butt cheeks " She said " No, it's in. " I said " check again - I can feel it between my butt cheeks. " I guess when nothing started draining she checked and sure enough....she had to go get a clean one and do it again. Needless to say I was charged for two catheter kits. I don't think I realized what it meant until she was shoving that tube up my hoo hoo. I resisted and put up a stink, but eventually gave in. Well, after surgery they left it in for 3 days. It was great not having to get up in my condition. When they came to take it out, I fought them to leave it in. Go figure! Ta Re: Funny... It was such a struggle to get out of bed and make it to the bathroom which was so close that I longed for that catheter. Plus, they were still pumping me with fluid so it would take 15 minutes to get the bathroom and back and by the time I got back I had to go again. I will never forget that part of my post-surgery. My husband was allowed in the procedure room when I had my hcg done. He came out of that room with a whole new respect for us ladies. He couldn't get over the length of the instrument they used. Getting up and down that last day to use the bathroom was murder, but it was imp. to get my pampered butt out of bed. The nurses were cute about it. When I resisted they told me if I kept it in any longer, I would probably get a nasty yeast infection. That's all it took to get my agreement:) I smell a conspiracy! I could get down but could not get up without help for close to a week. It was also very painful to clean myself up, but I was determined that I would do that myself and not ask my husband to wipe my butt like a baby's. My surgery was abdominal, so I had no vaginal discomfort. But it made sitting up, coughing, hiccuping, laughing, etc. very painful. Tara Re: Funny... I also could not get out of bed without help for a while. My dh and my mother took turns staying with me and taking time off from work for the first week or so after I left the hospital (but remember, I was only in there three days) and even got a friend to come help me when neither of them could manage it one time. I pushed myself though to become self sufficient so they didn't have to baby-sit me. I do have to say though that the surgery for my ep was a whole let better recovery-wise than my gall bladder surgery. Going in and coming out I was discomforted by someone poking around down there, but I felt no pain. Maybe the person was inexperienced. I hate when that happens. Tara Re: Funny... Luckily, I don't recall having my catheter put in. I do remember that it hurt really bad when they removed it, though. Then they threatened to put it back in if I didn't go pee soon. I made DH and my parents and anyone else who came to visit constantly bring me drinks. There was no way I planned to do it again. If it hurt that bad coming out, I didn't want to know what it felt like going in!! I don't even remember if I had one with my ep's. I had a cesaer with our son, and that was not half as bad as the ectopic.With my cesaer, I got up the morning after my surgery,and by that evening I was moving around fine, but with the ectopic, the agony lasted for weeks.I think for me it had alot to do with my emotional state though, coz with our son, I had good reason to recover and get out of bed, whereas with the ectopic, I had no desire to recover or get better or anything,so I do think it has alot to do with your frame of mind,and will power. A cesaer is alot more major, surgery wise than a laparotomy, so that makes me think that mental health has alot to do with recovery. anyways, my 2cents worth. take care sonja Re: Funny... I wasn't fortunate enough to have a lap, they just cut from just beneath my public line to my belly button (and I'm a very tall and high waisted girl). They had promised the bikini cut, but my life signs took a turn for the worse and they had to go right in. Is the lap where they go in through the belly button? They started with a laparoscopy (belly button inscision) and decided that to save time, they would do a laparotomy (just like a cesaer, with bikini cut) so I had 2 stitches in my bellybutton and one continuous stitch running across my bikini line, from hip bone to hip bone. sonja Re: Funny... I ended up w/ a yeast infection from it - my first ever YUCK Tara Re: Funny... , I have vivid memories of trying to go pee for the first time after they removed my catheter. I knew I had to pee but my bladder refused to let it go. I sat there for ten minutes trying to will it out. It was very excruciating. I don't think I have ever experienced that sharp of a pain in that area. Maybe that's what it's like when someone has a nasty bladder infection. Don't know. Never had one. I asked the nurse what my problem was and she told me that because the catheter was keeping the urethra (I'm not an anatomy genius so I hope I have the part right) open, it wasn't happy so it slammed shut when the tube was removed. I guess it was payback time. Payback with a vengeance!!! It was not painful for me, but I really had no sensation that I needed to go even though I knew that I must after all I had been drinking. I even turned on the water (did your mother ever do that when you were little?) hoping the sound of the running water would help...but it still took a long time for me to be able to go.
