,

Welcome to the list. I have a 8 month old daughter who also has a mild

hearing loss. I knew something was wrong from the get go but the doctor had

told me that Madelyn probally just had a attitude problem. This was when she

was a month old. I also have a 6 year old son. I was told not to compare the

two. I did of course.Madelyn was not startling to sounds. I never looked for

that in my son. I guess he just did it and I never thought anything about it.

I am like you. I have learned so much from the list.

Welcome Priscilla

I know you have questions about Dr. Thayer. I did not have him, but alot of others on this list did. So ask away. This is a very friendly bunch. We tease each other alot, so you might have to get used to that. Well, I don't do that but some do. Only kidding. We have had a few get together that have really been a lot of fun and we are trying to make a date for bowling soon.

Ihave an appointment with my surgeon (Dr. Buchard) on April 17 andhopefully we will be able to schedule surgery when I am there. Ihave medicaid for my insurance and I don't see a problem gettingapproval since I have heard they are the easiest to get it from. >$60,000 sounds excessive. Ask them to back it up with written

>documentation.

I must respectfully disagree. I would, instead, send a letter

documenting everything you were told (especially that outrageous

figure) to the person(s) who informed you of these things, with cc to

all of the superiors of that person(s). Act like you believe the

$60,000 figure, but don't let on that you know that financial

considerations may not be a factor for consideration of any part of a

child's IEP. Do mention, however, how the person(s) who discussed this

issue with you stressed the cost factor.

I also suggest that you conclude your letter with a statement that you

are formally advising them that you will not be able to transport your

child as of X date, and a new IEP must be developed to address that

issue. You look forward to working cooperatively with the staff to

develop a plan that would best serve your child's needs . . . <slather

sugar, honey, sweetness and light.>

>You are right to not go for a thrown together program, good

>for you.

It is also important to remember that the IEPT must consider all

options for placement, document why any were rejected, and choose the

program that will provide FAPE. I doubt that a hastily cobbled

together program can provide FAPE, but that issue should be fully

explored at the IEPT meeting, should they actually make good on their

threat, which I think I highly unlikely.

>> This year I transported with no compensation (I didn't

>>realize some parents are compensated), it wasn't a problem since the school

>>is located next to my employer.

You have the option of filing a complaint with the state and asking for

reimbursement.

>>Next year however it will not be easy for

>>me to transport her as my employer is moving. HNH is out of our district.

>>I'm looking for any advice on what other parents have experienced as far as

>>transportation. Have you been compensated for mileage, time, etc?

I have never heard of a parent being reimbursed for time, only for

mileage. However, IDEA does address the issue of transportation:

34 CFR Part 300.24 Related services.

(a) General. As used in this part, the term related services means

****transportation**** [emphasis added] and such developmental,

corrective, and other supportive services as are required to assist a

child with a disability to benefit from special education, and includes

speech-language pathology and audiology services, psychological

services, physical and occupational therapy, recreation, including

therapeutic recreation, early identification and assessment of

disabilities in children, counseling services, including rehabilitation

counseling, orientation and mobility services, and medical services for

diagnostic or evaluation purposes. The term also includes school health

services, social work services in schools, and parent counseling and

training. . . .

(B) . . .

(15) Transportation includes-

(i) Travel to and from school and between schools;

(ii) Travel in and around school buildings; and

(iii) Specialized equipment (such as special or adapted buses,

lifts, and ramps), if required to provide special transportation for a

child with a disability.

(Authority: 20 U.S.C. 1401(22))

IDEA '97 Final Regulations

APPENDIX A TO PART 300-NOTICE OF INTERPRETATION

33. Must a public agency include transportation in a child's IEP as a

related service?

As with other related services, a public agency must provide

transportation as a related service if it is required to assist the

disabled child to benefit from special education. (This includes

transporting a preschool-aged child to the site at which the public

agency provides special education and related services to the child, if

that site is different from the site at which the child receives other

preschool or day care services.)

In determining whether to include transportation in a child's IEP, and

whether the child needs to receive transportation as a related service,

it would be appropriate to have at the IEP meeting a person with

expertise in that area. In making this determination, the IEP team must

consider how the child's disability affects the child's need for

transportation, including determining whether the child's disability

prevents the child from using the same transportation provided to

nondisabled children, or from getting to school in the same manner as

nondisabled children.

The public agency must ensure that any transportation service included

in a child's IEP as a related service is provided at public expense and

at no cost to the parents, and that the child's IEP describes the

transportation arrangement.

Even if a child's IEP team determines that the child does not require

transportation as a related service, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation

Act of 1973, as amended, requires that the child receive the same

transportation provided to nondisabled children. If a public agency

transports nondisabled children, it must transport disabled children

under the same terms and conditions. However, if a child's IEP team

determines that the child does not need transportation as a related

service, and the public agency transports only those children whose

IEPs specify transportation as a related service, and does not

transport nondisabled children, the public agency would not be required

to provide transportation to a disabled child.

It should be assumed that most children with disabilities receive the

same transportation services as nondisabled children. For some children

with disabilities, integrated transportation may be achieved by

providing needed

accommodations such as lifts and other equipment adaptations on regular

school transportation vehicles.

Hang tough,

Celeste

We are reimbursed mileage at a rate of $0.31 a mile to transport Jake. It

equals just a bit more than the stated amount. They wanted him to go in a cab

FYI.....we use the transportation checks to buy US Savings Bonds designated

Hi, Jodi, and welcome to the list! I live in MA, my son Ben (19

months) has a severe loss and wears Phonak Novo Fortes. I'll admit

he's pretty hard on them (likes to rip them out while staring me

down, then dashing them to the floor or hurling them across the

room), but they've been in for switch/mic problems a number of times

(each aid) over the past year. Since he is so hard on them, it's

difficult to isolate whether it's the aids that are the problem, or

the fact that they're being dashed against tile. When they're

working, they're great. On the one hand, I'm disappointed they're

not more durable; on the other hand, I'm amazed that these expensive

pieces of complicated technology last as long as they do in the hands

(ears) of my little monster!
